Man, i used to listen to him in El Paso when i was just a kid.

They used to have a pic of him here at abc radio networks.

Good luck Zippo! I'll try and listen even though oldies is not my cup of tea.

Zippo...in the morning...in the morning...(as sung on KTKS-Kiss FM, 106.1.)

I remember reading a story years ago about his custom digs in Plano...a house with a theater inside, complete with real theater seats and all. Where's he been?

THIS IS COOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

When does he start? I plan to tape it!

Robert, seems like Zippo had just replaced, um, Walton and Johnson at Kiss about the time we hit that KTKS McDonald's remote in 1986!

Maybe this will be as exciting as H. E. R. O. Radio. What ever happened to that?

It was out of C.ON.T.R.O.L and totally K.A.O.S according to some, but to others it was a real T.H.R.U.S.H. ;)

I worked for him one year in El Paso.. I was a squirly kid with potiential, but got on the wrong side of the new ownership coming in (When Taber had to sell)... Zipp offered me overnights (from doing the 7 to 12 shift).. I went home to the midwest and KINT-98 was doomed, no matter what Jim tried.. Bouncing paychecks and revovling door in the latter days of a great CHR station, due to Chuck Ashworth's passing.. He knew how to sell it on the streets... Even in the anti-Top-40 era of '81-'82...The other sales people couldn't do it, even being number three #12+..... The movies in the Zippo apartments were GREAT.. Mel Brooks "High Anxiety" was the one we watch when I pulled into town with a uhaul on the back of my Dodge Monaco.....Memories! GO GET ZIP!!! "SKIPPER T...SUCK A MONKEY!" I am the Cool-Low-Gringo!" All the things I said on the air, in those days.... ;D

Looked on the KLUV site and their's no mention of Zippo anywhere? When he was with ABC networks we would bring him to Indiana and he was a blast to work with. The man was never out of the too cool hip dude mode.

i remember zippo when he did am in detroit. he's a true radio legend. wishing him well.

I remember him when he invented the zippo cigarette lighter! ;)

W&J replaced Zippo in mornings; Zippo moved to middays after W&J came to KTKS. KTKS' line-up became W&J mornings AM drive, Zippo middays, Humble Billy Hayes PM drive, Randy Chambers 6-10, John Roberts late night.

W&J were not doing mornings on KTKS when the station flipped to the Oasis format. I know this because I was PO that morning when I awoke to instrumental music rather than Zippo.

Yes, yes, yes... I have been overly aggressed at having to remove damn and hell from the playlist, over the past couple of days. Sorry about that!

Actually the last time I really got PO, occurred following the actions of my predecessor. It had nothing to do with music programming.

I was on vacation one summer, and my brother had a friend who wanted to tour our studio. While we were there, WBAP broadcast an EAS alert. It came through while our summer intern was on the air, and as a result the EAS box speaker was muted. Long story short, WBAP screwed up and as a result there was about 10 seconds of just static (lightning strike noises) and silence in the first part of their transmission. Since the EAS speaker was muted, none of us had a clue about WBAP’s mistake.

After our intern got off the air, I asked her if she wanted to forward that EAS alert. She seemed a little hesitant as she seemed uncomfortable carrying this out due to lack of experience (yes the students are trained on this, but often times real experience is the best master). So I graciously volunteered to handle it for her. My brother and his friend were standing right behind me, observing.

WBAP had made these types of mistakes in the past, and I recognized it as soon as we initiated forwarding the alert. I turned to face my brother and his friend, and told them what was happening. Out of the corner of my eye I see Andrea running towards the studio. Just as she is about to open the door to enter, the correct audio from WBAP the announcer finally comes through.

Unfortunately WBAP’s silence mistake led her to assume the alert had not actually aired, and an argument ensued between the two of us. The silence mistake had also led our traffic manager to reach the same conclusion Andrea had, and neither one of them would shut up long enough for me to explain WBAP had goofed. Our TM kept saying crap like “stop insulting my intelligence”. Exactly whose intelligence am I insulting here? It is the other way around!

Suffice it to say the whole ordeal finally severed my working relationship with Andrea, which was already on shaky ground as it was. Thankfully my brother and his friend witnessed all of this, and even though they were unfamiliar with the details of how the equipment worked, they could tell Andrea was wrong. They had a lot to say about her after we darted out of the studio.

Dr. G. was also on vacation that week, so my only evidence was the EAS tape which showed we transmitted the alert.

Robert's 5 day forecast is coming up

We’ll have pleasant conditions in the early part of the week. There’s a slight chance of Muskrat Love on Wednesday. Expect hellish activity towards the end of the week followed by a good chance of damn worry feelings over the weekend as folks start panicking from the approaching tax filing deadline. Procrastination will “rain” in (pun intended) the following week.

Now back to the 70s with this classic rocker from Van Halen, entitled “Dance the Night Away”.
