Yes, yes, yes... I have been overly aggressed at having to remove damn and hell from the playlist, over the past couple of days. Sorry about that!
Actually the last time I really got PO, occurred following the actions of my predecessor. It had nothing to do with music programming.
I was on vacation one summer, and my brother had a friend who wanted to tour our studio. While we were there, WBAP broadcast an EAS alert. It came through while our summer intern was on the air, and as a result the EAS box speaker was muted. Long story short, WBAP screwed up and as a result there was about 10 seconds of just static (lightning strike noises) and silence in the first part of their transmission. Since the EAS speaker was muted, none of us had a clue about WBAP’s mistake.
After our intern got off the air, I asked her if she wanted to forward that EAS alert. She seemed a little hesitant as she seemed uncomfortable carrying this out due to lack of experience (yes the students are trained on this, but often times real experience is the best master). So I graciously volunteered to handle it for her. My brother and his friend were standing right behind me, observing.
WBAP had made these types of mistakes in the past, and I recognized it as soon as we initiated forwarding the alert. I turned to face my brother and his friend, and told them what was happening. Out of the corner of my eye I see Andrea running towards the studio. Just as she is about to open the door to enter, the correct audio from WBAP the announcer finally comes through.
Unfortunately WBAP’s silence mistake led her to assume the alert had not actually aired, and an argument ensued between the two of us. The silence mistake had also led our traffic manager to reach the same conclusion Andrea had, and neither one of them would shut up long enough for me to explain WBAP had goofed. Our TM kept saying crap like “stop insulting my intelligence”. Exactly whose intelligence am I insulting here? It is the other way around!
Suffice it to say the whole ordeal finally severed my working relationship with Andrea, which was already on shaky ground as it was. Thankfully my brother and his friend witnessed all of this, and even though they were unfamiliar with the details of how the equipment worked, they could tell Andrea was wrong. They had a lot to say about her after we darted out of the studio.
Dr. G. was also on vacation that week, so my only evidence was the EAS tape which showed we transmitted the alert.
