Jimmy Haslam Press Conference

The Browns getting a new owner is as big a news story as it gets in this town, and the media was there in full force.

The press conference introuducing Jimmy Haslam was cariried by WEWS, WJW, WOIO, and STO on TV; WTAM, WKNR, and 92.3 The Fan on the radio, and of course all the major newspapers (PD, ABJ, News Herald) were there as well.

Ironically, Browns TV partner WKYC didn't carry it, but that was due to their obligations to carry NBC's Olympic coverage.

Haslam is from Knoxville. His father played football for Tennessee, then started Pilot Food Marts and Travel Centers. The whole family contributes to the university, and Jimmy's brother Bill is the current Tennessee governor.

The whole family knows how to get things done without being jerks about it. Too bad they didn't get into radio.

All those media outlets and one that was missing was FSN Ohio..Cable Exclusivity for STO the reason? or do the local FSN's not do press conferences if it is not for a team they cover..Other than Cavs/Monsters and some college, there's not a lot of local sports coverage on FSN, whom I would think would cover a similar Cavs story..

Correct, STO has the cable exclusivity.

FSO has the Cavs and Monsters, the Columbus Blue Jackets, the OSU football pregame show, and high school football (Thursday nights). That's all fall/winter stuff.

In the summer, they carry the Reds, but North of Columbus they're blacked out due to the Tribe claiming territory rights to Northern Ohio. (likewise the Reds for Southern Ohio, thus STO isn't carried).

Columbus, since they're right in the middle, can carry both.

FSO carries a lot of national stuff, like "The Dan Patrick Show" weekday mornings, and Pac 12 football/hoops (which Big Fox has a long term contract with)

Should have mentioned the Blue Jackets, of course..I kind of wish FSN would develop a local show. or even simulcast one of the Radio shows locally..

Well, none of WKNR's shows would fly, due to those infamous 4 letters out of Bristol, CT.

The Fan has a ready made show for FSO...you know, the one with the Cavs pregame host/sideline reporter.

Haslam seems to be more personable than Lerner, and I bet the media is hoping he is more willing to do interviews and inside access.

Lerner might have become less trusting of the press since he and his family were angry at WOIO for airing a 911 tape involving the death of his niece. So much that he pulled the preseason rights and moved them to WKYC right before the 2006 season. That was pretty much the only hands-on move he's done since taking over the team.

Maybe there's hope now for WOIO with preseason programming, though don't expect WKYC to give them up without a fight.

Well, channel 19 is televising this Fridays exhibition game vs Detroit.

Of course that was through a special arrangement with channel 3 due to the Olympics.

Left out of this explanation is that FSN Ohio generally sucks. They can't be bothered to do much extra with the teams they actually have other than game coverage and the occasional magazine show. That's the thing STO does so well, actually caring about its audience.

I think STO and FSN are bad. I have Direct TV and I watch many of the other Regional Sports Networks and STO and FSN Ohio could use much, much more original programming. The Comcast station in Philly, DC and Chicago offer more for the viewers. How many golf show reruns can STO air??

Having spent time in both the Cincinnati and Cleveland TV markets, I can say I like STO more than FS Ohio. Say what you will about Bruce Drennan, but a live, local call-in show is better than "Race Freaks" or a show about horse training.
