Jimmy Kimmel segment causes controversy for ABC

“Jimmy Kimmel Live,” Disney’s ABC late-night show, aired a segment 10/16 where a little blond-haired boy told Kimmel that the U.S. should fix its financial problems by killing all the people in China. Kimmel followed up on the comment by asking the other children on the panel, “Should we allow the Chinese to live?” Now the Chinese government, its citizens and Chinese-Americans are upset and have demanded apologies from Kimmel and ABC, which they did get. But was it enough of an apology?

This isn't one of Seth MacFarlane's comedies. This should never have happened. Jimmy should have said, "That's not very nice. The Chinese are not all that different from us."

In the November 12th issue of the Boston Metro (a free daily newspaper), there was a full-page ad on the back page from some sort of pro-Asian group urging that ABC fire Jimmy Kimmel and to boycott the network.

The ad urged readers "Don't Be Racist! Don't Be Kimmel! Be Like The Panda!"

The problem here is that a mere apology is not enough anymore. Now everyone plays the "victim" card, and wants their "pound of flesh," too. Hence the calls for his firing. I am not a fan of Kimmel, but this is going too far.

Political correctness has run amuck!

Well, here again, this has been the problem with TV comedy ever since SNL...writers who DON'T KNOW WHERE TO STOP. There is indeed a line between comedy and cruelty, but it gets crossed over and over again. Gotta be "cutting edge" y'know, or your phoney hipster friends won't like you. It's easy for schoolyard snark to take over.

This doesn't mean you have to do dumbed-down, crotch-level humor (I'm talking to YOU, Leno.) But there has to be some editorial conscience beyond just what's funny in the writers' room.
