Jimmy Malone out at WTAM

Jimmy's show was pretty entertaining and I consider him to be one of the legends of Cleveland radio, along with a lot of the other guys like Wills, Snyder and Brinda. I hope he can find another home and someone here keeps us posted as to where. Quite coincidental that the firing corresponds with this brief period before the upcoming presidential election?

Well, that's their demographic. The only station with an older listenership is WNIR in Akron, whose callers all sound like they are calling from nursing homes.
WNIR hasn't changed since 1985 and it sure shows it now. In about 5–10 years the core advertising base will be reduced to hospice care and funeral parlors.

Jimmy had Monday's off, so he was only working one hour, 4 days a week. Rob Rozicki hosted the shows on Mondays. Wills and Snyder have been filling in for that hour this week, but to be fair it's just mostly repeating segments from earlier in the show, which they usually do in the 8-9 hour already. I'm pretty sure they want to keep that hour local. I wonder if they just move Wills to 6-10am? People don't commute like they used to pre-pandemic, that 5-6am hour always seemed kind of silly to me anyways

I'm sure starting earlier was an attempt to one-up the competition. I can remember way back in the 60s in Florida that some stations had the morning guy starting at 6:30, then when I moved up north they mostly started at 6:00 then as the years went by some started at 5:30, then 5:00 and I even heard of one station that planned a 4 or 4:30 AM start for the morning guy but I think they got aborted when he started complaining and told them if he had to start getting up earlier and earlier that there better be a hefty pay increase coming. Now it seems to be going back the other way, I've heard a few morning shows starting at 6 AM. It's gotta be a killer for those syndicated shows that are live and the personalities are located on the West coast and have to start at 2 or 3 AM for the East coast. I'm assuming as the 5 or 6 AM hour marches west they just replay/voicetrack what they've already done.....or they just voicetrack the whole damn morning show and pretend it's live and drop in local stuff as they go.
I know I did mornings in Florida for three months and since I am a night person, that about killed me. You'd see me snarling at the sun and hoping I didn't burst into flames.

I know at least of one network morning show that is pre-recording segments and delivering them via Internet downloads to the affiliates. But this one goes to music stations - and instead of it being "real time news", it's mostly skits and bits.

That's what Bing Crosby did with his network radio show in the 1930s. He refused to do his show again for the western time zone. Except back then, they recorded the show on transcription disc. Then Bing heard about this company in California that was making recording devices that used magnetic tape. That's when he invested in a company called Ampex.

People freak out about pre-recorded shows as though it's new or the end of the world, and it's been done for 90 years. Nobody has to be chained to a console or studio anymore.

Brian that would make the most sense. Nothing against Jimmy Malone personally he just didn't fit on the station. His 1 hour show would fit better on WERE IMO. I never understood him not taking calls though. Geraldo is a minority, liberal in his views and took calls. If you have a bunch of idiots just dump the calls that is what they do on the regular shows.

Magnetic tape was first widely used by the Germans during World War II. Bing's buddy Jack Mullins, working as a signal corp technician, discovered some machines and tapes at the abandoned Radio Frankfurt facility toward the end of the war. He brought the stuff back to the USA convinced that the high quality of the tape recordings would allow his pal Bing to do only one show and play the tape for the west coast three hours later instead of doing the whole show over again "live" or have it played back on a lower fidelity transcription disc. Bing was so impressed that he invested heavily in the brand new Ampex Corporation. Unlike transcriptions, the high fidelity tape was indistinguishable from a "live" broadcast. The first taped playback of the show was in 1947 and by 1949, every radio show was done "live" for the first show and the tape played back for the west coast. Sometimes the whole show was done on tape. It changed everything.

Before Geraldo, I recall there was a minister in that time slot. I thought he was pretty good. Not sure why he left.

Wanna bet? I can pretty well remember 30-40 years ago driving home 4 to 6 in the morning and basically having the roadway pretty much to myself. 7 AM it was jam packed. Nowadays by 4 AM it's pretty crowded and by 5 AM it's like rush hour at the Indy 500.

I had heard, or read, that the Allies would listen to German radio broadcasts and wondered how Hitler could be speaking at all hours of the day. They didn't hear the audio imperfections associated with discs.

I know EXACTLY which show you talk about. I had to listen to that show (which shall remain nameless) several times and IMHO was painful to listen to. It sounded like all the callers were actors, and there was no real connection to the station which airs it, nor was there rarely any reference to the day or any mention of the outside world in any category (news, sports, entertainment, music,...)

Lets just say, if Jeff & Flash's WMMS Morning Zoo was the equivalent of and Oscar, this shows content is only *barely* worthy of a 1st grade "participation" award.
