Jimmy Myers to WILD mornings

Column by Joe Fitzgerald in today's Herald mentions that Jimmy Myers will host the 6-10 am slot on WILD (AM).

Reading the column at the Herald's site requires registration but I will briefly put it up for you:

I remember Myers, on his weekend show at WBZ in the mid-'70s, getting all bent out of shape because the styrofoam or plastic (forget which) torsos on which famous players' jerseys were displayed at the Basketball Hall of Fame were WHITE, no matter the race of the player. Not Caucasian-flesh-colored; white as in snow. Needless to say, he wasn't getting many calls supporting his view that night.

Jimmy is a good man he always had the PERCEPTION of having a chip on his shoulder, remember though he was also the only African American sports anchor in town for quite some time, and his expression of his views at times was misinterpreted by those around him who were not used to dealing with someone like him in his position, and they didnt know what else to think..... I actually started my career working with Jimmy on a tv show for children at WBZ TV when I was a little boy, he taught me a lot, he was always kind and went out of his way to try to teach me humility in the media biz. He's a good man but did have a little bit of a Napoleon complex (LOL), he's height impaired but amazing on air and knew his craft inside and out!. Congrats to him!.

... good... Jimmy's been off the air in Boston for too long. He's more talented that a lot of the hosts on the air here.

The reports of Myers' show starting at 6:00 AM appear to be exaggerated (for the rest of February this year). WILD is a daytimer without pre-sunrise authority. In February, they do not sign on until 6:45 AM. In March, sign-on is at 6:00, I believe, and will continue to be at 6:00 or earlier through August. As I understand it, WILD may be eligible for pre-sunrise authority at very low power even though Boston is well within the 0.5 mV/m 50% skywave contour of co-channel Class A WBAL. (The rules for pre-sunrise authority for Class D AMs located east of the dominant Class A seem to be less restrictive than those for post-sunset authority, but WILD, being east of Baltimore, is able to remain on the air at low power each evening until Baltimore sunset, approximately 1/2 hour after Boston sunset. Rumor has it that WILD once tried pre-sunrise operation but the power was so low and WBAL's signal was so strong that hardly anyone could receive a listenable signal from WILD. Remember that, just before Boston sunrise it is also nighttime in Baltimore and WBAL is directional at night, sending an even stronger signal--more than twice the effective power towards Boston--than it does before Baltimore sunset.)

Things will get worse for WILD in 2007. The extension of Daylight Saving Time will push back WILD's sign on to 7:45 in February and 7:00 in March. The last time Daylight Saving was extended (during the Nixon administration), daytimers were allowed higher pre-sunrise power for one hour a day during the winter. It's doubtful that Radio One would spend the money, but now that WILD diplexes from the WXKS (AM) site, it might be possible for WILD to operate directionally from both of WXKS's towers during pre-sunrise hours, and thus use higher power, which might provide useful--albeit still very limited--pre-sunrise coverage. Or if Myers' show became popular enough, I suppose that WILD-FM might pre-empt the first hour or two of the syndicated Tom Joyner Show--although, I doubt whether there is any chance of that.

True. The incident I mentioned was very early in his career, and he took on many more significant issues in sports and race relations as the years passed. As a college-age listener at the time, though, his approach seemed unnecessarily militant compared to the approach Lovell Dyett took with many of the same issues (minus the sports angle) on his 'BZ show.

I'll certainly give him a listen when I can. Gotta be better than Dennis and Callahan.

Very good point...also the Daylight Savings Extension will indeed
hurt them. By the way an article in today's Globe by Clea Simon
said that WILD will announce a "new local morning host" within the
next month. She must not have seen Fitzgerald's column in yesterday's
Herald, though I'll bet her column was penned a day or so earlier but
they only ran it ("had space for it") in today's paper.

http://www.boston.com/ae/tv/articles/2006/02/09/wrko_gets_back_to_local_roots/

{"Maryland-based Radio One, which owns the station, says a local morning drive host should be named within a month, according to station marketing director Alfredo Fonseca.")

I knew Jimmy back in the early 90's, he was not racist by any stretch of the imagination, the Jimmy I knew was very open minded, very gracious to all, had a brain, knew how to use it, and was very accommodating to anyone that wanted to engage him in conversation. Jimmy was always a good talk host, has lots of personality and can handle anything that comes his way, I hope this show is successful for him, it's nice to have him back.......

Coach Willie May does sports during the Tom Joyner Morning show.

A lot of people, rightly or wrongly, think Jimmy's burned bridges in the market. I preferred the guy to Ted Sarandis at nights. Sometimes, though, he would do or say something that made you think, "What the f--k?"
