Jingles on Jack?

The Las Vegas Jack-FM (Infinity) is using the TM You package from the '70s. I've always liked those jingles, but it seems weird they're being used on a Jack-formated station since their whole image is anti-radio. Nothing more radio-y than jingles.

Are any other Jacks using jingles?

Let me beat Lou to this one:

Nashville's Jack-FM, in addition to the Cogan liners, sometimes plays either one of two singing jingles, one that goes "We are the reason we do what we do/We play what we want on Jack-FM", and one with only the second line.

Perhaps Lou can shed some light on why a Jack station runs liners singing "We are the reason we do what we do".
______________

As Bob Perry posted the other day, "Never assume anything about JACK."

It sounds to me like a parody... An old-school jingle (thinking more along the lines of my old TV news days) might've said something like, "You are the reason we do what we do." I mean, think about it. We are the reason we do what we do... that's hilarious, I think.
______________

About as funny as saying Playing what we want... Who the hell is we? The station? The listeners? If it's the latter, shouldn't it really be Playing what YOU want?

No.

Because the original package as aired on KFRC was You are the reason we do what we do...

The original You jingle was a 30 second "song" about 'we do it all for you.'

So yeah, it's a joke.
______________

The use of the TM You Campaign package goes back to the Canadian Jacks. WJMK was using the same package the first weekend, until someone found out (as I found out recently) that Nine FM has the package in the Chicago market.

TM Century has the demo for the jingles resung for Jack FM on their web site--neither the You Campaign nor You II is openly offered through either the regular site or Studio Dragonfly (and I assume that they don't have access to the Ron Hicklin Singers or any of the LA people anymore, since the vocals sound like the Dallas singers).

With the original Jack stations, you can discern that the conceit "We [Station] Play What We [Station] Want" is a parody of "We Play What You [Listener] Want" -- which was a hallmark of the whole Star/Mix "We're building YOUR radio station, so you [Listeners] tell us what you want to hear."

With all the knock-offs, this is really that apparent.

And what a coincidence that it was always Celine, Mariah, Madonna, Elton and Rod that the listeners wanted to hear. :)

And Fleetwood Mac. You can't have an AC without playing Fleetwood Mac every 90 minutes. Or Gloria Estefan. The kids just go crazy for her.

Jack?

"We" is the station and it's listeners. People (outside of radio without all the built-in radio biases) who love Jack get it. Radio people don't but, since they don't get diaries, it doesn't matter.

No it isn't. Isn't the whole "Jack" philosophy "don't bother to request a song because we won't play it anyway"? How does this include the listeners?

I'm not sure what you mean by "getting it". It's this year's fad format...it will succeed in some markets where it's done well, and will flop in others...just like most other "new" formats we've seen over the years. What happens when listeners tire of hearing songs the second time around that they got sick of the first time around? There's a reason a lot of that stuff doesn't get played anymore. My guess is that the format will morph into an 80s/early-mid 90s gold format with all the stuff outside that range gradually disappearing.

Interesting how they are almost all totally jockless. Hate to say it, but that might be a large part of the appeal too.

Jack?

Sorry, but yes it is. Trust me. It definitely IS. What I mean by getting it is that radio people are generally very quick to say those putting on JACK stations don't care about the listeners because they say "playing what we want" and not taking requests, having jocks, etc. You can be sure that in markets like L.A., Austin, Indy, Nashville, Seattle and other placew where JACK has gotten off to a great start the listeners truly get it.

BTW, I'm not sure I'd be in a hurry to say these Jack stations are anything close to where the might be in a year or so. Most of the Canadian JACK's have personalities and I just think it's way to early to tell because this deal is so new most stations are sort of feeling their way along as they go. It's not the way I might do it (go into it so fluid) but it is what it is.
