Jo Stafford - 1917-2008

This week, we lost one of the 10 greatest female vocalists of the 20th Century--Jo Stafford. She sold over 25 million records during her heyday of the late 30's-early 60's. "You Belong To Me", "Shrimp Boats", & "Make Love To Me" were some of the biggest singles of that era. We will miss her. :'(

Along with Dinah Shore, she ranks as one of the top two female singers of the pre-rock era. A great talent.

WTUX, it's interesting you should mention Dinah Shore. When I first "discovered" this music in the early '90s, one of my favorite songs that I used to hear on the old Original Hits network was "Shrimp Boats." Since I wasn't familiar with the songs or artists, for years I thought that was Dinah Shore until I acquired it as part of the Time-Life Your Hit Parade series. Now I have it included on my "best songs of all time" homemade CD.

Here's something I did not know. I read it in yesterday's paper. Jo Stafford won a Grammy Award for a comedy album with her husband Paul Weston.

We've now lost two of the truly great ones in recent months - Eddy Arnold and Jo Stafford.

They performed that Grammy winner under the names "Darlene & Jonathan Edwards". It is quite good! And it is true: Jo & Dinah were the top 2 female acts of the pre-rock era. If you like female singers, check out my little nostalgia board to see where they rank among their peers(IMO):

Wow Eddy Arnold and Jo Stafford, two of the greats.

Jo Stafford doing "I'll Be Seeing You" is one of my favorite songs of all time. Now it has new meaning.

"I'll be looking at the Moon but I'll be seeing you..."

I did like her songs. Dial Global played "Shenandoah" on Monday. That one depresses me.

But I did like "You Belong to Me" and "Make Love to Me" and "Shrimp Boats".

Paul Harvey, on The Rest of the Story, said last week that Ronald Reagan turned Dinah Shore from a Republican to a Democrat. Isn't that ironic.

Wow I just found her Shaendoah on "You Tube" what a beautiful song. Many thanks! It's a shame there aren't more people who appreciate this kind of music.

I never liked that song. It depressed me back when we would sing it in school. Although it kind of makes me feel good to hear it now.

One reason I mention this: I only like one Carole King song--"Where You Lead"--because it was the theme song to one of my favorite TV shows, and a show that got me addicted to the Internet because I found some friends online who were fans. They've disappeared, but I still keep in touch with a new set of fans. Who for the most part got disgusted with the last season and hate the show now, but they're still close.

I know the show you're talking about, I was a big fan too! TV went downhill for me when the series ended.

As for Carole King I like her music and enjoyed seeing her on the show from time to time.

I worked at what they used to call a "Middle of the Road" music station from '74-'78 and a standards station from '81-'85. So I guess I kinda use that as a music reference.
