Joanne Nesti out at WVIT; rare N.E. main anchor opening

Below is the article from the Hartford Courant

who will the replacement be? What about a secondary anchor in Boston who wants a main anchor job?

Joanne Nesti Calls It A Career After 25 Years

November 1 2006

Joanne Nesti will cap a 25-year broadcasting career as one of the best-known news anchors in the state when she leaves WVIT, Channel 30, next month.

WVIT president and general manager David Doebler said it was Nesti's decision to leave after the Dec. 22 broadcast.

"Joanne has been a consummate pro every single day when it comes to journalism, and when it comes to serving the people in the state of Connecticut," Doebler said. "She is a spectacular talent. We wish her all the happiness in the world."

Her announcement to colleagues Tuesday and her intention to announce it to viewers during the 11 p.m. newscast didn't necessarily come as a surprise, Doebler said.

Nesti cut back her work a year ago, stepping down from co-anchoring the 6 p.m. news with Gerry Brooks late last year to work part time, concentrating solely on the 11 p.m. newscast.

Since last year, she had a one-year contract for the 11 p.m. slot, filling in for Brooks as needed on the 6 p.m. newscast.

She's co-hosted with him during high-profile political debates this year, including a widely watched July debate between Joe Lieberman and Ned Lamont and a gubernatorial debate at the station last month.

Born in the Bronx, Nesti grew up in Wallingford, attended Holy Trinity School in Wallingford and Mercy High School in Middletown. After graduation from Trinity College in Burlington, Vt., she worked as a substitute teacher in Bristol before going to broadcasting school. She first worked in radio in Waterbury and at Hartford's WPOP-AM, alongside her future TV co-anchor, Brooks.

She was named WVIT co-anchor in October 1982 and has since won a number of awards, including an Emmy in 1994 for the station's coverage of a carbon monoxide poisoning death in Suffield.

Doebler said Nesti's departure will be noted with some special programming next month, and plans for future anchor lineups would be announced shortly.

Channel 30 has been gone for a while. As far as I can remember they have dead last at 5, 530, and 6PM, and they win the 11PM only when NBC does well.

I think that's too bad for WVIT... I'll really miss JoAnn, especially since she's been the face of channel 30 for decades now. She's really a sweet and down to earth woman and I wish her the best.

Since she's a veteran Connecticut news anchor only after Al Terzi, Gerry Brooks, and possibly Janet Peckinpaugh (unconfirmed), maybe WTIC-TV FOX61 will try to pick her up if they had any brains. I think someone like her could really make "The News At Ten" somewhat respectable again. Afterall, they successfully put Pat Sheehan back into service after he left the "big 3" years ago.

You can find Nesti's official biography here:

Pat Sheehan was with WTIC's 10 PM newscast when it started back in 1989. He hadn't been gone from WFSB-TV channel 3 that long. As for Joanne, although it would be a nice touch, I doubt she'd ever turn up at WTIC.

Uh... just to let you all know. Joanne is retiring. This was her choice. She's not going to show up on another station.

I hear Lisa Carberg will be taking over. I also heard although it was Joanne's choice, NBC didn't beg her to stay. NBC is not happy with WVITs ratings. WVIT is the only NBC O & O in New England and they want improvement now. Nesti won't be the last WVIT anchor to leave. Expect more changes.
