Job Relocating to Houston

I know this is off topic but you all seem like a plugged in bunch. Hopefully I get some responses before the Mods delete or move my post. My company/Job (non radio) is likely relocating from Lafayette, LA to Houston in the spring of next year and I had some questions about the housing market in Houston and about certain parts of houston in general. If any of you guys that could maybe give me some feedback on certain areas of town and the housing market in general, would PM me, it would be appreciated.
Thanks --Josh

I'd recommend the Katy Area. It's a long drive to Houston (25-30 min), especially since right now Interstate 10 is going under major reconstruction. But a lot of people like this area. The neighborhoods are nice, the education system is top notch, and you don't have to drive into Houston often since there is more retail stores than ever before and Katy Mills mall is one of the biggest in the state.
If you really want to live inside a nice neighborhood inside the city limits, you will have to pay more money from your pocket. There are some nice neighborhoods by West University Place, but I think the price is too much. I recommend Katy or the U.S. 290 area (Cy-Fair).

Also check out Pearland/Friendswood/Clear Lake. Good neighborhoods, schools are very good as well, a whole LOT better commute into DT, and 30 mins from Galveston!

If you have kids, I agree with the above two posts. However, if you don't have kids and want to experience city life, there are some good places closer into town to live that are as relatively safe as the suburbs. Parts of Heights, Midtown, Medical Center, and Galleria area are good, and moderately priced compared to most major cities.

If you're looking for Suburbia, Katy, Sugarland, and Pearland is where you want to land. Great schools and a safe, wecoming environment. If not, look inside the 610 Loop; downtown, midtown, The Heights, The Village. Great restaurants, bars/pubs and shops. You will definately pay more, but you'll be 10 min from anywhere.

I'd go with the East Side. I know all the yuppies are scared of the East Side, which makes it even better. Channelview, Baytown, Northshore, Woodforest, Crosby. Lower cost and once you get outside the Belt you can take off your bullet-proof jacket; and much much easier traffic. I wouldnt move to Katy if you gave me a FREE HOUSE. I'd rather live in hell than have to drive in from Cypress. West side is all horrible traffic, except for Sugarland, but guess what, they're putting up miles of more cookie cutter houses, so give it another year.

Yes, go with the East side but look around first.
You are BY FAR safer in the Clear Lake MLS area with some of the better shopping away from traffic hell.
If you want the very best schools on the east side, Mont Belvieu offers this but the real estate ain't for the faint hearted.

Just my opinion..

LaGrange they have alot of nice open land and you will be safer there.
2.5 hr drive time.

I believe Galena Park schools are good....and Deer Park too... Just don't get too close to the refineries.

Deer Park schools are good. You can live in some nicer parts of Pasadena that are next to Deer Park & still go to DPISD schools.

But, IMO, that area is butt ugly (refineries & treeless). Ugh.

Don't forget Ft. Bend County (Sugarland, Missouri City, etc). Fairly close to downtown Houston (around 16 miles from where I reside) and both Beltway 8 tollroad and SW Freeway (US 59) run by the area.

The Fort Bend Tollway now makes it possible to get from the Galleria to Highway 6 in Mo City in about 20 minutes. I drive it daily, but I pay the price. $1.75 each way. It adds up, but the time saved is worth it.

Good schools in Fort Bend...although not quite as good as when I first moved to the area nearly 20 years ago.

Fieldtech/Josh-

As someone who has relocated from Lafayette to Houston, you will find a few things you will like.

1.) There are a lot of us here... and I am NOT talking about Katrina refugees.

2.) Housing here IS cheaper for the most part (based on a per sq. ft price) if you know where to look. Stick to the West/Southwest (Katy/Sugar Land)part of town if you have a family. The Woodlands area is nice as well! If you are young and single, look around the Galleria area, but be careful! One wrong turn and the neighborhood can turn on ya! The burbs aren't bad for single people, but being in the middle of it was always so much better from what I remember.

3.) If you are an LSU fan, make your way to Big Woodrow's on Chimney Rock for the games! It is PACKED with LSU fans and is a great time.

4.) There are a few good reminders from home here. There are a few decent restaurants here that will satisfy your cravings and SOME people here are okay when it comes time for crawfish. Stay away from Pappadeaux's if you want real Cajun food, though! Also, Hebert's Meat Market (from Maurice) has a few satellite locations here...

5.) If you are ever REALLY homesick, its just a 3 hour or so drive back for the weekend!

6.) Let me know if you need anything... I'll be more than happy to help out a fellow transplant!

Also... you will find a zydeco hour or two here if you listen hard enough on the radio (just to make the topic somewhat relevant). Maybe some other board members can help on that. I also know that the Big Easy on Kirby used to have Zydeco on Sunday nights, but I am not sure if they are still around and, if they are, if they still have the Zydeco nights.

OK, so what are the good, authentic cajun places in town?

I have had the most luck at Bayou City Seafood on Richmond, eating at Woodrow's (during LSU games), Ragin Cajun (except for one time when they burnt their roux!!! I talked to the owner and he told me it wouldn't happen again... haha), and a few other places that do the plate lunch type service. There is one place on the outskirts of downtown that I remember having great plate lunches, but my memory is failing me on the name.

Jimmy G's is so-so... I have actually had really good gumbo at Babin's more times than not! Boudreaux's is okay, but nothing special. I have always had good luck at Denis' Seafood when it was on Westheimer but haven't been to the Katy Frwy location yet.

I'll try to think of more... but I am in no way suggesting that these places would be better than some of the places in and around Lafayette. However, if you are here, this will satisfy the cravings! I may have forgotten a few places though!

Excellent! I love a good cajun restaurant, and a good cajun meat/seafood market. If you think of any others, especially towards Clear Lake, I'd appreciate it!

Thanks for all of your suggestions, the overall consensus seems to be to stick with the western side of town which is good cause it looks like thats where my employer will be. I appreciate all the feedback...... Thanks --Josh
