HI! I am thinking about moving to Texas possibly near the end of the year, but wasnt sure how to find radio jobs out that way? I was looking in the San Antonio area. Any ideas, or websites of stations that you are willing to pass along?!

I would appreciate it!!

HAVE A GREAT DAY!

San Antonio is a lousy radio market. Don't be fooled by the riverwalk-seaworld-fiesta Texas -chamber of commerce look image. The city over all is very cheap labor and the unemployment figures are high. If you insist on coming to Texas for Radio work, try Austin first,Dallas-Ft.Worth second, Houston third, but be prepared to work in a non broadcasting job first for at least two years.
I apologize for this being negative, but it is a hard cold fact.

He's absolutely correct in what he says. I left Texas because I couldn't afford to work there. <P ID="signature">______________

Bullsh*t

San Antonio is a great city. There's a reason why San Antonio is the fastest growing city in Texas and 3rd fastest in the nation. San Antonio job market has changed over the last 3-4 years. You people need to do some research before posting b/s on this board.

I wouldn't suggest Austin to anyone...unless you don't mind living in the ghetto. Austin is truly a great city, but there are radio people in Waco making way better money than a lot of the folks in Austin. Plus, Austin's cost of living is the highest in the state. I would advise San Antonio over Austin in a heart-beat...just based on the cost of living.

Sa I lived in San Antonio 18 years. I count Henry Cisneros as one of my friends and who I helped get elected as a councilman before he became Mayor, etc over 30 years ago. SA is a fast growing city population wise,BUT it also has a large influx of illegal immigrants .The wages are lower. The only thing SA has is the Northside,Northwest side and the river walk.South San Antonio, East SA, and west San Antonio around what was KELLY AFB have gone to seed.Central Park Mall,Windsor Mall,Wonderland Mall,McCreless Mall,Southpark Mall have gone dark.Northstar Mall is holding its own. HEB Grocery has done well but have started closng some of its stores due to loss sales. Harlendale ISD SouthSan ISD,Southwest ISD,Edgewood ISD,SAISD are hurting financially.ONly the Northside ISD and Northeast Isd seem to be holding on. The job market has changed yes from a miltary based one to Tourism. Fiesta Texas is not doing well by the way at last check. Seaworld broke even.If you drive loop 410 south from Babcock rd to I-35 The Laredo Hiway, you will see more boarded up stores, graffiti, and run down homes. Drive I35 from the Austin Hiway to Loop 13 it's worse. Barios have doubled.
Nelson Wolfe former Mayor of SA recently said that San Antonio's economy has stagnated.Losing Brooks AFB and the aerospace medicine unit only adds to the decline.Population wise San Antonio is growing but its welfare rolls have doubled. SA's crime rate has increase while Dallas has decreased. The homicide rate in Sa increased 18% last year. Theft went up 15%.So SA I did my homework. My still have contacts there, and I converse with Henry several times a year. My advice to you, work out of SA for at least 6 months then go back.Your perception will change that SA is NOT a good place to establish one self. If you were born there, lived there all your life and only have worked there, then I understand your sense of pride, but pride can be blinding at times.

There are far more immigrants, in total number, or percentage of population, in Houston, Austin and Dallas than in San Antonio.

That means there is something else causing the conditions you describe, not immigration.

Dallas Household income is $59 k, Austins is $58 k and San Antonio is $47 k, among legal residents. Again, something else affects pay scales and incomes.

Out of curioosity, how can one tell an illegal immigrant on sight?

Yes, go back to school. San Antonio, in the past two to four years, has shifted it's focus. It had to thanks to BRAC. Without the military, changes were inevitable. The growth is due to new companies locating here. World Bank, Washinton Mutual and Toyota. The PGA tour is locating here. Texas A&M is expanding and relocating a campus here. Kelly USA is expanding and Brooks City Base is booming. Oh yeah and there are a few jobs at "little" companies like Clear Channel, Citibank, USAA and AT&T. These are just a few examples, but you get the point. Not all of the growth is in the North either but is city wide Most of these companies like it here because of the cost of living. Yes, wages are lower here but so is a house, insurance and groceries.

As for the unemployment rate, in 2004 it was 6.2%. At the end of 2005 it is 4.5%. That's lower... not higher. Dallas 5.2%. Houston 5.9%. Austin 4.2%. I would highly reccomend San Antonio over Houston and Dallas, but I wouldn't rule out Austin, especially if you lean to the left a bit.

San Antonio is a great place to live and work. It is still market #30 and the 8th largest city in the US but that may change in the next few years as our growth rate overtakes San Diego(7th).

Don't rule out San Antonio just because a couple of people that don't live here and don't know the city anymore have negative feelings about it. If you have a number one morning show you may very well have a good shot at a decent job in this market. Give it a try. You will find people here more receptive than in a major market.

KPLEXCOMPLEX READ WHAT radiotex2

You really need to get your facts straight. San Antonio is a much different city than when Cisneros was mayor. Dallas, Austin, and Houston have a higher income than San Antonio but the cost of living is much higher.

Bottom line. San Antonio is no place to make a living unless you were born into wealth. Their hopes rested with NAFTA after the Miltary boom, and that has not come to fruition. Perot was right .

KPLEX's facts are accurate . If you noticed he also mentioned Nelson Wolfe. Cisneros is still involved in community affairs in SA. Jeffrey Wentworth your State Senator has also concurred that SA is in Economic trouble. San Antonio Property values have declined in most parts of the city. Drive around Miltary Drive and see the the economic blight for yourself. Its normal for a native to stick up for his home. The radio market in SA has declined since the days of Waterman, and mission broadcasting.

radio billing has gone from $80 million in 1999 to an estimated $112 million last year. How is that "no growth?"

Despite all the negative comments, San Antonio has a deligtful lifestyle if you enjoy this essentially bicultural environmnet, SA is over 50% Hispanic, nearly the double of Houston or Dallas and considerably more than Austin.

SA Hispanics, in thier majority, are second generation and beyond, many dating back 6 or 8 generations. Less than a third are Spanish dominant. Because most listen to English language radio, you will find many stations find it necessary to consider Hispanic tastes in programming. This also means knowing how to pronounce "Bexar" correctly.

The cost of living is more reasonable than pricy Austin, the traffic is better than Austin (ugh) and it is afriendly town. I have spent a lot of time in the Hispanic areas to the South and SW of downtown, and find them far safer than others have described. All big cities have a degree of insecurity, but SA is a pretty nice place if you are into its special culture.

David has given you the chamber of commerce viewpoint. He is a radio consultant. The key phrase "he visits", he does not live there. If you want culture in an hispanic world by all means yes go to San Antonio, but if you want to make a living, think twice. The south and sw parts of SA lead in homicides, auto thefts, and drug trafficing. David must have only spent a few hours or maybe a couple of days at most in those areas. Growing up there is far different than visiting.

A standing ovation is in order for saradio. San Antonio is indeed a beautiful city, with a deep heritage, and wonderful hard working people. How inappropiate for you to come onto this board and denounce the people that call it home. Very distasteful.

Economic trouble? Where are you getting your information from?
Other than Austin, San Antonio economy is the best in the state. We wouldn't be one of the fastest growing cities if our economy was in trouble. Think about!!
Here's a quote from our mayor-
“The future is bright for San Antonio and the state of the city is strong,” he said at the annual event sponsored by the Greater Chamber of Commerce. “I look forward to 2006 as a chance to continue the work that we've started.” He's referring to the thousand of jobs that are coming from Washington Mutual, National Security Agency and others.

What are you talking about??? Housing value decline??
Last month, Fortune magazine proclaimed the Alamo City the nation's "hottest" residential real estate market for 2006, with a projected appreciation rate of 8.3 percent. That follows a three-year stretch in which home values increased more than 20 percent.

If you don't live in San Antonio or know much about it. Plz don't post of what you think is happening here.

"radio billing has gone from $80 million in 1999 to an estimated $112 million last year. How is that "no growth?"
Very True!!

Lets 'look at what you said:
"

THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. Of course they are going to be upbeat..that is their job, their mission just like any othe Chamber of Commerce. Gloss over or ignore the bad.

Funny Forbes, Barron's and the Wall Street Journal said the opposite. I guess it depends who pays the free lance writer.

I lived in SA probably far longer than you actually and still have family members there and close friends. Try the Deerfield section off US 281 and Bitters Rd. Your Police Chief is also a friend of mine that happened to have graduated from my High school in the Northside ISD..go look it up.

Yes that is true. Problem wwith the answer is two fold;1) The mention of Waterman Broadcasting and Mission Broadcasting was in relation to Quality Programming content. Not the cookie cutter assembly line drool that passes for programming now. Only a sales person would see it in terms of income not programming. 2) When you figure in the cost of living adjusted for inflation, with increase spot loads, and consolidation yes your billing will show an increase from 1999 to 2005. A fact conveniently left out to show an artificial plus.

Oh well you Love SA and will stick by it. So be it. If you want to eeek out a living rather than make one it's a great place.
