Jock salaries

Just curious: What's the average salary for a jock in Chicago at stations like The Loop, The Drive, K-Hits , Rewind , Lite etc ?

A lot tells me nothing. Numbers please. 60k, 80k or more? Not morning guys, just average jocks on other dayparts. How much?

I'm guessing, especially nowadays, anywhere between $45,000 and $140,000 for a full time, live jock. I was at the same union station for 12 years and at the end was off mornings and just did afternoons, making $120,000...and as soon as NY saw that, I was gone...unemployed for 2 years...did a year at a station 100 miles away for $28,000 to feed the family, but am now back in the city(not Chicago, but a major city)...doing mornings making $40,000, and am thankful as hell.

making 100K sounds like alot IF you've never checked out what the cost is in Chicago or NYC, the cost of living is ENORMOUS, especially IF you want to live close or even near the cities. at that price you might be able to afford a 1 bedroom apartment there. your standard of living will be much, MUCH better making 40 or 50K in Rockford or Peoria. there are two sides to the salary issue.

You might be better off going to work in a teeny weeny market that isn't even recognized by Arbitron. I hear tell the jocks in those markets make more than seasoned jocks in the top markets, Chicago or New York. Lets just say it's enough to afford new cars, buy condos and rental properties galore, have others do everything from washing their faces for them to doing their laundry. And they don't have to show up on time or even at all if they don't feel like it. They voice track from their home studios...or so they imply. They live in the utmost luxury.

I know people who jocked at K-Rock in NY in the 90's and had to live 40 miles outside the city just to be able to pay rent...

40 miles away from the job, and ten miles away from where they claim to live...but by golly, barely trained and unable to find work in the bigger markets and I would say some have landed right in a pot of jam at six plus figures. Next it'll be that they're being kept by somebody's husband. Oh, wait a minute, we already went there.

I have no idea what jocks are paid in Chicago, but having lived there for 24 years now, I'll
advance the reference that in order to afford a "somewhat" nice house plus average expenses, an income very close to
6 figures is necessary.

A friend of mine was offered 9 bucks per hour to Jock at US99 back in 1997,... he declined. Another friend hosted middays in Portland, OR for $24,000 circa 2001 (Clear Channel). I was offered a morning news gig in Memphis proper for $21,000, I said nah, cause I was making a whopping 24K in unrated IN and paying 295 rent. Short answer, who the bleep knows.

the high cost of living in a place like Chicago,NYC & the top 20 markets put a wet blanket over ANY desire i once had to boast about working in the So called BIG TIME... a buddy of mine who works in the "big time" told me he paid $850K for his house! i was expecting the "Clampett's mansion"! i vistited him a few years ago, it was smaller and not as nice as my 4 bedroom house with a pool, a $140K house i have in market... lets say #150+. hope he's enjoying the, big time.

Nemmine the jock salaries, there aren't ANY RF broadcast engineeing opportunities available in
Chicago, and there doesn't seem to be any likelyhood there will ever be.

Still I am very happy I decided 40 years ago to live in Chicago, and a huge stock of housing did permit to find
my DREAM house, 2 story yellow Kittanning Pennsylvania brick with intact 1925 attic-longwire antenna and 1/4 inch antenna plug-jack right there on the living room wall. Chicago river and park out the front window. Lake 3 miles away, downtown 7.

WhoDat!-
If I moved the 45 miles back to Lake/Porter IN county-line where I grew up, I'd be sittin' pretty, $-wise, but
I'd rather be exactly where I am, despite the $ costs, so your friend may be enjoying the "big time".

It IS very limiting in an employment search to "require" a salary so inflated by living in such an area.
Those who desire to live even closer to downtown need even more money or accept smaller sq footage everywhere.

"Would you be intrerested in relocating?"
No!
Not when I'm EXACTLY where I'm supposed to be!

Best of luck to all who do ply radio in any aspect in Chicago and those who would like to......
