Jocks on 99-5 The Vibe??

It's been a while now since 99.5 flipped to CHR. Do they plan on adding jocks any time soon?? They do weather and traffic but thats it. Usually new stations would have jocks on by now. Anyone know if they are looking for some? I sure hope Cumulus doesn't plan on doing a jockless CHR over there because that never works. It'd be just like them though to screw up a CHR that actually has good presentation and music by having no jocks! They always do something to screw up their CHRs. Hopefully this isn't the case.

At one time, there were rumors that they were courting "Nick Nice" formerly of 103-7 The "Q" to do nights again.

Wow if thats true then he would be SO far away from the typical cumulus CHR jock. He's fresh, wild, crazy and very entertaining lol. Then again, like I said before, music and presentation on The Vibe sounds very good so far which is outside the norm for a cumulus CHR too so who knows. That would be BIG for The Vibe if they got Nick Nice. He was extremely popular while on The Q & he's exactly what an evening CHR jock should sound like.

Is Nick still in the market? I figured he'd be at The Q forever.

Cumulus has been making a go of it here in Mobile since WABB went away; they got a similar call, copied their playlists and hired away most if not all the air talent.

It's odd they're willing to go the extra mile here to siphon WABB's listeners away from the competition but not willing to do even basic things in Birmingham.

Zach, seriously? Maybe I've just been in the game a little too long...

Here's the exact reason why:

Jan Jeffries, big wig corporate programming guy at Cumulus (and die hard CHR fan at heart), grew up in Mobile and has tried to beat WABB for YEARS! Bernie Dittman even threw he and John Dickey out of his office when they tried to buy WABB. Jan has NEVER had any luck even making a dent in WABB. When they went away he was foaming at the mouth to possibly have a successful CHR in his home town.

I don't expect WABD to be half the station as WABB. Unfortunately, Hit Music Now won't either. CC is content with their voice tracked, premium choice baby in Pensacola. Alas, the sad state of radio in medium and small markets today.

Cheers!

So what you're saying AshliO is that WABD isn't so much about smart corporate radio as it is one guy's obsession with beating WABB? With Cumulus' legendary cheapness, I wonder how that will play out in the corporate boardroom. After all, they haven't just hired people away from WABB, they've established a support staff and built a studio in Mobile just for the morning show.

Yes.

Now let's look at the "support staff." They hired Q-Tip, Nick Fox and Blondie to do the morning show. Blondie voice tracks middays and Nick Fox voice tracks nights. They have Scott Adams doing afternoons and handling the programming. That's a pretty small staff....

A studio for the morning show?? Cumulus built brand new studio facilities in Mobile back in 2002. When Hot 1041-1 launched on 2002/2003 they got the nicest studio in the building. I guarantee you they are still broadcasting from that studio.... nothing new has been "built."

In fact, Cumulus is the reason Q-Tip is on the air in Mobile at all! He was part of the morning show on Hot back in the day and moved here from St. Louis. He left Hot, sat out a non-compete, and then went to work for WABB.

Cumulus is definitely favoring WABD/Mobile, however, it definitely seems as if they are working within their "budgetary" constraints.

Cheers!

Brandon Merhout (AKA Nick Nice) has been out of radio for several years now and is on somewhat on a "spiritual journey" one might say as an "inspirational author and speaker." Here's his website: http://www.brandonmerhout.com/

Whether or not he'll return to B'ham to be on 99-5 "The Vibe" remains to be seen, but it would be a refreshing change in the market...again.
