Jocks who made it to major markets from WB/Scranton?

GMV said:
If you consider Saigon a major market, then count me in. Al Wolfe brought me from Triangle's WFBG in Altoona to WILK in 1964. Three years later I was Chief Announcer for the Armed Forces Radio Network headquarters in Saigon where I took over The Dawnbuster (better known as "Good Morning Vietnam") in late '66. I replaced Adrian Cronauer; Pat Sajak (spelled "Sadjak" back then) took over the program after I left in October of '67. The show originated in Saigon and was broadcast countrywide via repeater stations. Don Fox

Great story, Don. Yeah, with a population of 9+ million, Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City would be a "major" market--bumping Chicago from the #3 spot. For those who may have never seen "GMV," gotta find it on Netflix--terrific movie. Being the guy who replaced Adrian Cronauer is extremely cool. One more thing, Altoona's WFBG was a great radio station back then. Co-owned with WFIL, the Mighty 1290 had all the toys--and outstanding talent.

No big deal here. I started in the 26th market, Bridgeport/New Haven, then moved to suburban this and suburban that and suburban the next place. Relieved a hospitalized one-man operation at, literally, the edge of nowhere (two steps away from the Atlantic Ocean), worked in the 74th market (South Bend) doing, among other things, the Metropolitan Opera -- station breaks every hour or so. Now I'm back in the 50th or so market. 26th to 74th to 50th; sounds like a drunk who's in rehab.

LA -- Me? Still stuck at the SuperPower1500Watt 885 reading newspapers to the blind, homebound, elderly and cheapskate sighted people. Aren't we the 50th market anymore?

Ooops! Wasn't thinking when I read your post. Actually, I think we're the 48th market in TV and in the survey just released by Arbitron last week, we're now #71 in radio.

Tom Carten, Have your years in radio caused you to instinctively go for the superlative?
Where is this "SuperPower1500Watt" station you speak of?
WRKC still runs 440 watts to the best of my knowledge, but hey, that's not so bad.
I think it was running 10 when you started!

We got a power increase recently and a new set of bays. Super885 rules the ether.
