Kurt Gilchrist, the channels program director, does a minimalist shift occasionally. There used to be a woman named Sari who had a similar shift, but she left XM to "pursue other opportunities" a few months ago. Jocks' duties on that channel generally consist of reading promotional copy for other channels or for XM equipment, not entertaining the listener or saying anything about the music. Somebody on one of the fan boards once posted that he'd e-mailed Gilchrist about the bland sound of the channel and got a response that '70s Top 40 radio, which 70s on 7 tries to duplicate, was dominated by bland, time-and-temp-reading DJs. Needless to say, many listeners who vividly remember great personality radio during that decade disagreed mightily, but the channel hasn't changed for the better. In fact, it sounds more sterile than ever.
Interesting XM factoid: The two jocks on The Loft, Mike Marrone and Kate Bradley, are NEVER on the air live. They swap voicetracked six-hour shifts, all recorded several hours to several days in advance, yet the channel still has a very "live" feel to it.
