My advice to Jody...

As a person who has seen Brian Purdy in action here in Houston, watch your back. I wouldn't be in your shoes right now for all the tea in China. And, if I were you, I'd probably walk away from it. I just wouldn't trust anyone there right now. I think I'd follow Ron right out the door. <P ID="signature">______________

You don't have to go out of this market to see what Purdy has done and how he operates, just take a look a few years back to his operation of the CC/Dallas cluster.

I see uncertainity in Jody's response. Brian Purdy is one you do not want to meet in a well lit alley.

Have any of you had the experience of working with Brian Purdy? I don't know
the full story of what is happening at KLUV right now, but I can say that I
have worked with Mr. Purdy in the past and it was the most positive experience
that I have had in radio.

When Brian took the reins at Clear Channel he had a LOT of cleaning up to do. Dakaree says 'look at what he did to CC/Dallas'. Yes, look at what he
did - he took a cluster that was an absolute mess and cleaned it up, set it straight, poised it for take-off and then was let go. There was a lot of
hard work and changes to be made when he got to Dallas, it took time just to get it back 'above ground'. A lot of behind the scenes things that most
people know nothing about. I don't agree with everything that he did, but
then I have never agreed with a manager 100% on everything. I know that he
treated everyone with respect, was a possitive influence, and was respected.

His timing wasn't fast enough so he was replaced with someone who drove it
even further into the ground than it was before.

Purdy changed the whole atmosphere there making it a place people wanted to
work at and to be a part of. I hear a lot of Infinity people feel that way
about him there. Remember, he is having to clean up a huge mess again left
by the previous Market Manager. Messes like this are not easy to clean up,
take time and yes, will even p*ss some people off.

For what it's worth, that's just my experience of working with him.
Not heresay, judgement or gossip.

A BIG change from previous mgmt like Schurr...who cared about noone but himself

Maybe Jody and Howard Garrett could go into business together! Seriously, though if Jody isn't Ron's successor in a couple of weeks; I am giving up free radio and listen to Barry Williams on Sirius.

True love is a beautiful thing ...

Barry Williams should have stuck with the Brady Bunch. His act on Sirius wears rather thin pretty quickly. But your comparison is a good one.

Around locally, here's hoping Jody can hold it together and assemble a workable deal with the powers that be. The people in the offices with the thick carpet, be they HR or other type suits, just can't seem to let well enough alone. They, whoever "they" are, may not be happy until the deal with Jody has been fouled and KLUV lies in smoking ruins. Hey guys and gals at the corporate helm, don't stop with just one person, bring down the whole operation now and save dragging it down a piece at a time. Let it fall into the Black Tarn all at once, a la the House of Usher.

Remember when they used to talk about the man in the carpeted office? Who really was the man in the carpeted office. I loved that phrase. Ron had some great stuff!

He did indeed, including the bit he did one morning in the late 80s, announcing his retirement--to open a medical clinic next door to the training school for Benehana of Tokyo cooks.

Remember when Ron did some "acting" - like in that lousy Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader movie and his voice was heard in North Dallas 40. What other things has he been in thru the years? Wasn't he on some western way back when?

He did a quick bit as a train conductor on The Big Valley in the 1960s. He also was cast as a man in jail in some foreign country (program name???) and said to another prisoner, "Hey, pal, you an American?"

I checked the imdb.com which is notoriously inaccurate and based on the train conductor part, here's what it says:

Actually, i believe the show was called Crime Stories if memory serves me well, still..

It was whoever the GM was at any given time. The last one he really talked about much was when Jerry Bobo was GM at KVIL while they were still at Mockingbird and Central. That ended in August 1991 when Bobo decided to go raise horses full time and told Mel to shove it. Bobo re-entered radio some years later with Metromedia when he took the GM;s job at KRLD (Bobo remains there to this day...well, for the moment anyway...this weekend's consolidation could change all that!) Forgive me, I digress. Funny thing though, much to Bobo's surprise, shortly thereafter Infinity purchased Metromedia (or whoever Metromedia had morphed into by that time)...and guess what, here comes Mel all over again. Bet that was an interesting moment!

Just remember, never trust ANYONE with Safety-Orange colored hair!

Hasn't anyone else noticed in Jody's response he mentioned the 'guy in charge
of KLUV in now over JACK and SUNNY'!!

JACK = Infinity
SUNNY = Clear Channel
