Joe Benson out at KLOS?

just called a source over at KLOS... :( Its true, Uncle Joe has left the building. Thats all I got, no reason why.

Joe is/was one of the really good jocks there. To replace him with the lousy east coast AC sounding jock PD is truly a crime. Joe gone is one less reason to listen to this once great station.

Wow.

I get the feeling that the days of KLOS as a rock station may be numbered. They kicked out Rita Wilde and brought in some bigshot from NY, who proceeds to do......nothing.

....and now they (apparentlly) can a longtime jock.

Of course, it could just be that Uncle Joe is on vacation and Gary Moore is filling in. (Moore is one of the more passionate jocks out there, and it's a shame they let him go a few years back.) Indeed, a bunch of KRTH jocks are out this week with fill-ins, so perhaps don't jump to conclusions.

Overall it doesn't matter. KLOS is so freakin' boring, I don't think anyone is listening outside of a few rednecks in San Bernadino and some homeless dudes camped out under a bridge in Ventura. :)

He's not on the jock lineup page on the KLOS website--
it has Buchmann doing 3-7pm.

I guess Fagreed's bonus wasn't big enough and they had
to cut yet another air talent to help fund it.

Hate to start rumors, but I can't resist. I love KLOS by the way. Anyone know what they could do with 95.5?

I can't imagine the hell it must be to be a jock. Imagine being Jim Ladd, Joe Benson, Charlie Tuna, Bob Coburn.... These guys are in their 50s, (at least) assumedly with families, houses, the works. They probably enjoyed big salaries at one point. Now, they are liable to be fired at any time, without warning. Doubt they want to just pick up and move cross-country at this age - even if jobs were available (which they aren't.)

Hope Joe made a lot with those "Uncle Joe's Record Guides" way back when. :)

Didn't Joe Benson leave KLOS in the 90's and go to Arrow 93.1?

As of this posting, Joe Benson tweeted this 6 hours ago:

"maybe I should not have broadcast from Detroit..."

the previous one:

"Brian Regan tix and why you shouldn't let your wife pick the music on Tuesday's Five O'Clock Funnies http://unclejoe.com/funnies...
5:05 PM Aug 17th from web"

... so it appears he thought he was going to be on the air as he was promoting the Tuesday show... interesting.

--- GRUNO ---

Yes, in the mid-90's KLOS fired all the long-time jocks, including Uncle Joe, and went "grunge." It was a big failure, and within a year they had gone back to classic rock. By that time, though, both Uncle Joe and Bob Coburn had got jobs at Arrow.

So Uncle Joe was fired while he was out of town? Am I getting the story right? Unbelievably tough industry!

And while we're on the subject, where is Geno Mitchelliniiiiii?.......... Loved that guy's crazy antics with Joe Walsh.

Sorry to bug you guys, but why did I just hear Green Day's "When I Come Around" on KLOS??? It happened at around 2:26am. (I couldn't fall asleep) Is that the normalcy, or is there something to look forward to?

Seems to be a tear in KLOS' time/space continuum - I'll have to check into that...about 9 hours ago from web
All Access is reporting a new Imaging Slug line “SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA’S BEST ROCK” .... What's next? Mainstream rock format here they come????

Looking at the KLOS website it would seem that the PD, having recently transplanted from New York, is
more interested in promoting himself as a personality on the station than recognizing the legacy Joe Benson has in Los Angeles.
Cost cutting or ego maniac?

They've been playing a little bit of 90's grunge for many years.....just the obvious things like Nirvana, Green Day, and Soundgarden.

And why is Jim Ladd no longer on Friday nights? Friday nights is when Jim is at his best - when he lets it all hang out and plays some hard rock, rockabilly and overall fun party tunes. I always hate it when he is not on and they play the same old Def Leppard tracks.

This station's changes are not going to be good. Seems like the guy will try to take the station a little bit more active, and by tracking a middle ground, will not make either the classic rockers or the active rockers happy. And he clearly does not understand that this is a heritage station and while the numbers may not be great, it is only the heritage that is generating them.

Under Citadel's leadership, this was only a matter of time. RIP KLOS, the end is coming soon. Maybe the Sound will one day have a KLOS day. Or not.

Looking at the playlist, I don't think anything is changing at KLOS whatsoever. Same stuff they've been playing for many, many years. Definitely not going "active,".....or going anywhere for that matter. Maybe going "automated" though! Ha....

No Friday night for Jim Ladd? No Theme Of Consciousness?? Or does that concept move to Sunday night? Jim Ladd on Sunday night?????? Copywriters start wording the KLOS Obituary haha

Wrong wrong wrong.... You are forgetting the Brand-New-Original positioner --- ""Southern California's BEST Rock" !!!!! :p

Considering Buchmann started his career in the shadow of rock-era KLOS sister WPLJ in New York, carrying the tagline "New York's Best Rock", I would say that has more to do with it than anything. He seems to have a penchant for heritage. He did bring in all renowned jocks at Q 104.3:

Jim Kerr: WPLJ
Maria Milito: WXRK
Ken Dashow: WNEW
Carol Miller: WPLJ, later WNEW

And plenty of weekenders, like ex-WNEW staffer Ian O'Malley, have worked at WNEW, WPLJ and others in the NYC metro.

I did read somewhere when he left Q 104.3 that he said something along the lines of classic rock's shelf life nearing its end in its current form. Perhaps KLOS will take a turn towards a true AOR, like heritage Metromedia/WNEW and KMET sister WMMR still does in Philadelphia.

As far as losing Benson, I don't think it would be a personal thing from Buchmann's track record. It must be either ratings or contract.

Rita was (callously) dismissed way back in January. This guy has had seven months to do something - anything. But the station has the same exact playlist, the same exact jocks, (except apparently Benson now).. the same exact everything. Very puzzling.
