Joe Bonsall, Oak Ridge Boys

Sad news as Joe Bonsall, tenor singer of the Oak Ridge Boys, has passed away at age 76. Joe had retired from the band for health reasons.

He was the most energetic member. You heard his voice on many hits including Elvira.

I just learned something about Joe Bonsall I didn't know. Not long after he joined the Oak Ridge Boys, they were asked to sing background vocals on a song by Paul Simon: Slip Slidin' Away.

I thought the backgrounds were by the Dixie Hummingbirds. They sang on Loves Me Like a Rock. The Oaks also did a cover version of that song, and that led to Paul asking the Oaks to sing on Slip Slidin' Away. That song became a hit the same year (1977) as the Oaks' first big country song, Y'All Come Back Saloon.
