Joe Buck stepping back from announcing?

Fans who don’t think Joe Buck does a good job calling baseball games on Fox and would prefer to see him replaced might get their wish sooner than they realize.

During a long Q&A with 590 The Fan’s Tim McKiernan at The Improv Shop in St. Louis Tuesday night, Buck was asked about remarks he made in a podcast interview with Brad Straubinger that indicated he might like to step back from his baseball broadcasting obligations in the near future. Was that true? Or did McKiernan misinterpret Buck’s remarks?

I'm not sure if it's just baseball...some people just don't like Joe Buck, regardless of the sport.

Joe seems to be in a confessional mood lately. I saw somewhere that he had become addicted to hair transplants. That falls into the TMI area for me.

No real shortage of sports casters, although NBC seems to be stockpiling the big names. If Joe wants a break, I'm sure there are a lot of capable people ready to step in. By the same token, if his contract is soon to be up, this might be a negotiating strategy.

right now, despite the fact that he's a very polarizing announcer, i don't see Fox willing to let Joe Buck leave them and i'm sure anything regarding a retirement for Joe might be a negotiation ploy to try to get Fox to fork up the extra cash. After all, in the MLB Post season this year, Joe showed some emotion when the Cubs won the NLCS and then the World Series.

I don't think Buck is a bad announcer, though I seem to be alone on this thread. I think he has a pleasant voice and while he does offer opinions every now and then, there is no rule that a PBP guy can't do that. I have listened/watched him on many broadcasts this season as he is the the lead PBP guy for Fox, and many of his games have been Seattle games. I think his partner Troy Aikman is more opinionated, and he should be in the "color" position. Whether Buck wants to cut back I guess is his business, but I seriously doubt he is being forced out, though nobody has accused Fox of this yet. I, for one, would be happy with him continueing in his current duties.

I would love to know why there is such widespread disdain for Joe Buck (or Tim McCarver). Always have.

OTOH I never liked Pat O'Brien's voice for some reason, though I'm probably a lone wolf there.

McCarver, especially in his final years on FOX, tended to ramble. It's all well and good that he was the catcher for the Phillies in 1971, but a story about a taxi ride he took with one of his teammates just seems out of place during a game. McCarver still rambles his way through about 25 games for the St. Louis Cardinals regional telecasts.

Joe Buck has a bunch of different reasons to be criticized. I personally find him very good at baseball, poor at football, and very poor at golf.
You can't avoid the insinuation that Joe Buck got to his position because of his father's many years working baseball and football. Joe got his start for the St. Louis Cardinals in the early 90s, the same club that his father worked for for over 40 years.

And of course FOX paired Joe Buck with McCarver, who won two World Series with the Cardinals, providing the perfect ammo for non-Cardinals fans to dislike their pairing even if there was nothing technically wrong with their work.

I don't mind Joe Buck at all. But one thing that drives me nuts about sportscasters in general is this: You're watching a game and a player makes a great play. The sportscaster then goes off to tell you how that player "is such a dynamic player, and one of the best in the game". It could be the only play the guy makes in the entire game, and could be just some random nobody player, but they go on to create this dramatic story.

I think he's OK too, but nothing special. And maybe that is the point, the lead baseball and NFL announcer for FOX should have a more distinctive voice. Of course, it seems like all play by play people are more bland and generic now than they used to be. They used to try to get that distinctive voice that you could instantly recognize, and networks don't try to do that anymore. There are quite a few of Fox's play by play announcers that sound similar, and I sometimes have trouble figuring out which one it is. Sometimes I have to listen to the color guy before I can figure out which team is doing the game.

Jack Buck had a great voice for announcing. He didn't do the NFL on TV since I've been a fan, but did Monday Night Football on the radio for quite a while. Dick Enberg, Pat Summerall, Don Criqui, Al Michaels, Dick Stockton, Verne Lundquist - those were the main announcers in the mid to late 80s on NFL games when I was a teenager, and they all had distinctive voices that I'd take over Joe Buck any day.

I like Joe he does a pretty good job at baseball & football there isn't many that I don't dislike for play by play. There was only a couple that I didn't like was Brent Musburger glad he is on SEC Network so I don't have to listen to him much Paul Mcgire although looks like he is retire I just didn't like him.

Brent has turned into a pervy old man. I think that's why ESPN took him off the main broadcast.
