Joe Chille is leaving WJYE

Joe Chille posted on Facebook that Wednesday will be his last day at WJYE. He's leaving after 34 years to "explore new opportunities" in Public Relations and Media Relations.

It makes you wonder if there's a whole new direction coming up for WJYE, or if he's disenchanted with the current direction - which isn't panning out so well.

Joe's been a steady, dependable morning guy and manager there, with a great understanding of the local audience and local programming. Whatever the reason for his departure, I wish him well. He's one of the great guys in the business. Good Luck, Joe.

I had a chance to interview with Joe many moons ago---definitely a quality person and all-around radio guy.

Maybe it was time. WJYE isn't looking so good in the ratings and might need to be re-invented. A good time to leave that to someone else.

So the radio industry loses another "pro" after 34 years.

I noticed a few weeks ago that Joe was reaching out to new folks either on Facebook or LinkedIn and seems like he stated that he was interested in developing some new relationships in the media of some sort.

As Rox stated, Joe's one of the great ones in the business. I join with so many others in wishing him good luck in
his future endeavors.

Now that's some serious TSL! Thirty four years is an exceptional run in any business; such a stay at the same radio station is extraordinary. My best to Joe in his next endeavor, which I hope will yield 34 more years. BTW, our mutual friend Max Von Blaupunkt hinted at this several months ago while walking his German shepherd, Woodie. Guess he knew something was up.

This , to me, signals a big time change or tweak in format. The station has not been doing well from a ratings standpoint, or a revenue standpoint. Should be interesting.

Chille will be missed for a number of reasons. He was good on the air, a knowledgeable program director and also worked well with the sales department. There's a certain irony that a guy who programmed WJYE to some of its highest ratings is walking away from the station at the nadir of its ratings.

It is really unfortuante because he is a passionate broadcaster, and cares about our industry. He is a rare breed, but given the challenges radio is having right now, it does not surprise me.

Could it be that Joe is not enamored of the direction that's been dictated for WJYE from higher up the food chain? Maybe he's tired of taking flack for decreasing performance of a station that's been forced into an untenable position. Or, maybe he's just jumping ship before being pushed. It will certainly be interesting to see who replaces him, and where the station goes from here.

Great points Rox- i tend to think that Joe did not WANT to leave radio. You do not want to leave after that amount of time. My money is that he is sick of corporate, and that he sees an industry that is not what it used to be. WJYE will be going thru some changes. They should blow up the format. The fact that they are still calling it "new" tells you of the lask of attention it has gotten.

Now the ad in AA has been posted for the morning show. 34 years? Geez, thems big shoes to fill.

Also might be that it is no longer "fun"...."prestigious" ... or overly profitable. Or maybe Joe got tired of getting up early, and working hard when the reward for doing so is that you get to come back tomorrow and do it again. Maybe he would like to explore a different path as a solid, and employable guy. He knows people in law enforcement, education, and government in Erie and Niagara Counties..maybe a new direction there... I have known Joe since we were in middle school, and we worked at the same stations in the Falls. He is a genuinely nice person, and has stayed loyal to the Western New York area.

Perhaps he is just weary of it all.

Sometimes, I have days that hooking a hot dog wagon up to my Ford truck and setting out to find sleazy vacant lot carnivals...sounds like a better deal. Everyone likes a good hot dog. And people who frequent vacant lot carnivals are genuine, and enjoy fun.

I not only wish him well, but I an certain he will be making an announcement before long.

Good luck Joe!

I saw the help wanted advertisement in the Buffalo News Sunday employment section.

If the present morning "show," temporary or permanent is any indication, Joy will not perform well in AM drive. As much as Chille, listeners will miss his pleasant and professional partner, Cheryl Hagen, who was given a pass to the beach without the benefit of a two day fare-thee-well. Hagen has been all but ignored in this thread, but she was an integral part of the WJYE morning show, centering its appeal to Women. What's more, she professionally delivered the newscasts and features, rarely if ever stumbling and fumbling. That glaringly hasn't been the case since she departed.

It makes you wonder if Town Square was really that blindsided by Joe's departure, or if they're that inept. They obviously have to advertise for the job to fullfill the EOE requirements of the FCC, but you'd think that a blind ad would have sufficed if they knew it was coming. Letting Cheryl Hagen go seems like a cheesey cost-cutting move if they don't have a replacement show waiting in the wings. If they were going to go with syndication, you'd think that they would have done it by now. It sure will be interesting to see what the final outcome is.

And the cycle continues - worse product, less people listen, revenue declines so more cost cuts to product quality.

Anything to ensure the bankers get their payments.

Good point. Could it be WJYE has plans for a big morning show? Janet Snyder perhaps? Long shot, but how else does Town Square explain showing Chille and Hagen the door for what's presently playing?

Makeradiowaves may have it right in an earlier post. With JOY's tumble to a 3.8 share, it may just be time to totally retool and present Western New York with a new format.

I couldn't guess as to what it might be. But, I can hear the hammers and saws SFX now, "We're building a new radio station. A radio station like Western New York has never heard before. A radio station designed specifically with you the listener...blah, blah blah".

Element 9 presents an interesting scenario. Janet Snyder as a possible replacement for Joe Chille. It would seem that KISS (and Janet) need to think about the future. I don't know Janet but, as some have suggested, she's got to be getting up there in age to be the host of a CHR morning show.

If JOY's going to continue in the AC arena, that might be a possible fit. But I hear Janet's rules the roost over at
the Entercom cluster and she's treated like a queen. I'm not sure she'd receive the same favored treatment over at Townsquare if they can afford her.

9 goes on to suggest that Joe and Cheryl were both shown the door. While it seemed that way, that wasn't the impression that Joe presented in his two days of saying "goodbye". But then one has to wonder why someone who was on board for 34 years, making a very, very nice living would decide to leave without another well-paying job waiting for him.

It looks like Jeff Silver fired him, but offered Joe a deal. Unlike most on-air people being fired (like Cheryl), Joe got to say "goodbye" on the air. But he had to pretend to be retiring and say only nice things about how well he was treated by JOY management and Townsquare corporate.

All talk from 6am to 6pm, music overnights and on the weekends.

Hey, a guy can dream.

I'm intrigued by the Janet Snyder to 96.1 FM idea. I could totally see that working.
