JOE ELLIOTT SUBBING FOR TERRY MEINERS IN THE AFTERNOON

I've been listening to Joe filling in for Terry this week. He's been filling in since Monday. Joe mentioned today that Tuesday the PD asked him "what the plan was" for the afternoon. He said he didn't have a plan, but yet he had the regular participants for news, weather, and sports that Terry always has. But when Joe fills in he usually has a bunch of other contributors, like from Fox and CBS radio speaking on topics like the economy, plus local politicans like Jack Conway speaking about the gas prices. I'm so impressed with Joe, and Ian (the producer) in their ability to conduct short, yet informative interviews, during such a busy program.

Isn't this better than the usual stuff-- like hearing a fake Joe B. complaining about the "Cardinal cry-babies"?

Anything is better than the usual stuff. Too bad Meiners isn't as funny as he thinks he is. He could take some lessons from Gary Burbank.

There are a lot of engineers who think they're better than they are too.

Please. He's taken enough from Gary Burbank as it is. I have a friend who thinks Meiners' "Henry Sadlow" character is the funniest thing he ever heard. I guess so, unless you've heard Gilbert Gnarley. After hearing the original, Henry Sadlow makes me feel sad and low and the same time.

Miners may have the words, but he ain't got the melody. I thought Burbank's afternoon show on WLW was about the funniest thing on the radio. Listening to his airchecks on the WAKY memorial site crack me up, too.

I believe there is a autobiography coming out in the next few months on Gary. I'll be interested to read it and see who he credits as his inspiration.

Terry has always been pretty funny i miss i believe it was randy davidson who did buzz baxter i really miss that bit. I was about 12 or so i remember when terry and ron on wqmf there first day and took the station hostage that was so f-ing funny and they just did not show up at work at wlrs back then and just showed up at qmf and lrs wondered where they were and wlrs triend to go to court and stop them and it failed.

Speaking of joe why does he stay at whas?He has talent and i am sure could get another full time gig in talk radio.

They couldn't call it Morning Sickness, LRS won the name. That's why they called it The Show with No Name. My favorite Clay/Meiners bit was the funeral of news person Jamie Douglas. Jim Nabors was singing Sunrise, Sunset and suddenly your heard gunfire, it was the Jeffersonville Police Department wanting him to stop.

Growing up in Lexington, I had Burbank and Meiners as a choice and listened to both. The power line interference in Owensboro keeps me from regularly receiving WLW or WHAS, so I drifted. I'm partial to the early years, but Meiners still makes me laugh when the power line noise isn't overwhelming.

Joe Elliott needs to be on the radio. But as long as talk show host are required to question patriotism if you don't agree, he will sit on the sidelines. As you can tell, I'm tired of the "Who's with me!" style of conservative talk radio. I can't wait until it becomes a thing of the past. Meanwhile, you would think WFPL and Joe Elliott could work out a wonderful relationship.

Randy Davidson was very good and I do miss the Buzz Baxter character. Probably left due to the first wave of downsizing back in the 90's. Jeff Ketterman is the fellow who does the voices of Jay Leno and Bill Clinton. I know Jeff cause he lives in my community and he's a very nice and talented guy.

I'm not sure why Joe stays at WHAS but its always nice to hear him on the air. Do you think he has a non-compete clause in his contract? I think his nighttime show went off the air last November, so maybe he can't do anything until this November. I'm not sure how common non-compete clauses are in the radio industry here in Louisville, but Valvano and Wilford must not have had one since they left 790 one week and started on 93.9 the next. I do remember Meiners had a non-compete clause in his contract when he left QMF for HAS back in 1985, but I think that was only a 6 month non-compete clause. On the TV side, Ken Schulz had a 1 year non-compete clause, and yet Bill Alexander left WLKY and went to WDRB without a delay. Does anyone know anymore details on why some people have these clauses in their contracts?

Joe has a passion for radio i am just surprised he is still at whas but perhaps the clause you speak of but who knows

I really miss him at night when john belski was on nightly from wave 3 and there little give and take every night.

I agree totally with you on the nightly weather segments. I also enjoyed the visits he had with Ken Schulz, when Ken would express his opinion on topics as "Ken the Milkman", cause he as the meteorologist wasn't supposed to have an opinion. I think that is whats wrong with radio today. So many of these corporations want announcers, and not personalities, unless they are angry. If you get an angry personality, its like rubber-neckers at a traffic accident. People will tune in to see what's going on, and yet they offer nothing toward the good of society. At least with Joe's nighttime show, a listener could actually learn something about the problems of our world.

Non-competes are part of the biz. Meiners was under a non-compete with WQMF ironically to prevent what happen three years earlier when they stole he and Clay from LRS. Non-competes with a high profile personality is one thing but making a lonely DJ sign one is pretty useless. But companies have been known used them as intimidation. My advice is to have an attorney look over the non-compete before signing. If radio management has a problem, tough. Forcing someone to sign a legal contract, if proven, is a no-no. Plus, keeping someone from seeking employment without compensation during the non-compete term is also a no-no. I'm not an attorney but I once stayed in a Holiday Inn Express so that should account for something.

IIRC, Meiners' non-compete was for on-air radio performance but he was on the WHAS payroll. He showed up at station appearances and was involved with a promotion to have Terry Meiners work at your business, sort of a 1985 version of "Dirty Jobs". If you remember from Meiners' first day the first few breaks he was in "Show with No-Name" mode with the damns, hells and christsakes until management suggested to pull back. He acknowledged the event after he played Margaritaville and commented about how Jimmy Buffet could say damn and he couldn't.

I enjoyed his give and take better w ith ken better. Then belski i like belski with him cause he would go in depth about the weather but with ken ken was always so funny. I remember in the late 90s when ken would take wayne perkeys shift on the station when he went on vacation he is a funny man. If weather had not been his callin he would be doin stand up at the comedy club or laugh factory but he and joe made a good team.

Just because you can doesn't mean you SHOULD...
