Akron, Ohio) January 27, 2006 – 1350am Radio Free Ohio, (WARF-AM) will be the new radio home of longtime successful radio personality Joe Finan starting February 2006.
Mr. Finan will host a daily Monday-Friday talk show, middays on 1350am.

“I’ve been set free from the restrictions of my non-compete agreement and I’m ready to tell all.” Mr. Finan added, “There is so much I’ve been wanting to say, and nowhere to say it.”
“My First show is going to be a lot of fun”.

Mr. Finan “retired” from a Kent Radio Station, in December of 2005, after 19 successful years as that stations most listened to personality. Mr. Finans broadcast career includes WHK-AM, and WIXY-AM Cleveland, in addition to radio stations in Denver, Colorado.

Aha! So THAT's why OA was mentioning Joe Finan on OMW!

:D

All kidding aside, that's a great move. I kinda envisioned this as a perfect match, and a hugh PR boost for WARF. If he's displacing Stephanie Miller, that's another shot at WNIR - and would pit Joe against his former collegue, Howie Chizek.

I guess Howie will have to change his disdain from "the afternoon crowd" to the "midmorning crowd"--as in, "I wonder how the midmorning crowd wil explain this..." as he reads another bit of liberal outrage.

For the record, Joe will be up against Howie's 283,000 listeners (I think's that what it is this week ;-)), the largest talk radio audience in America. Or so I'm told...

HA!

WNIR, as a station, cumes about 68,000 people per week. There is only 500-something people in the entire Akron Arbitron survey area!

I don't know where you got that 283,000 figure, but it is impossible.

By the way, point of reference, a station like WDOK In Cleveland has a weekly cume of about 245,000. So, Howie has more weekly listeners to his little Akron show than the entire weekly 24/7 cume of WDOK?

There's a bridge in Brooklyn...

So does all this mean that Clear Channel Akron might actually have to admit that, after wasting everyone's time this spring with the Fox Sports format change, that something actually exsists on 1350? Might the black tarps on the some of the billboards around the area be removed to reveal an actual station logo?

Might it actually show up in the Spring 2006 Arbs?

Stephanie Miller was the best show on WARF.
Too bad you couldn't dump another show...

I'm Confused, what do you mean by black tarps?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but 1350 has showed in the ratings in recent months and years. I realize when 1350 was WSLR was the last time the station saw anything real.

There are some billboards in the area that used to feature all three CC Akron/Canton station logos. When 1350 dropped Fox Sports the logos were painted over on the billboards.

My question is simple: does CC finally start to promote this station in a similar fashion to their sisters WKDD and WHLO, or will they simply continue to fail to tell listeners that the station exists?
Edited by dguisinger on 01/28/06 11:14 PM.

That was fast! I guess they are promoting.

I saw a billboard today for 1350, on State Road in Cuyahoga Falls .
It read "Joe Finan is Not Dead" it included the 1350 Logo and weekdays 11am.

In the past few weeks I've noticed a 1350/Air America message on the big electronic board on 271 north. It's out of the Summit Metro, but Cuyahoga County is democratic. Figure CC Outdoor most likely gave them a bonus.

Akron has always had some interesting outdoor messages for radio stations. I never saw the three headed monsters with all three logos? Which begs the question to be asked, why would anybody do that? Three different messages?!?!!?!

Some of my favorites from the past....

WNIR promoted more power and a stronger signal. The boards were placed in an area where the signal was fine BEFORE the signal increase.

In the early 90's WKDD had Matt Patrick and the waking crew in a large bowl and the slogan "Cereal Fillers". About the same time Jeffery Dahamer became a story and the boards were changed to SERIAL KILLER. Never got that one. Anybody remember the "Matt, Music and More boards?

WNIR also had "Comedy is Ugly" with Stan and his crew. The message was okay, but the photo looked like it was taken with a cellphone camera.

91.3 the summit has boards up with about 18 words on them, some in small print.

When they were a gold based AC, WQMX had a deal with Dairy Mart. On the outside of each store there were MIX 95 and eventually Mix 94.9 give us the 1st button posters. Some of these were still up two years after they switched to country. Many of the Dairy Marts closed and nobody took down the posters.

I got it from Howie himself--he's continuously mentioning the 270/280,00 figure on air.

It's all an act, I know, but it's hilarious because we all know it isn't true!

It must be like that one station in Cleveland that always states that their signal reaches "38 States and Half of Canada"

Well, that statement (about WTAM night coverage) is at least theoretically possible, if conditions are just right (which only happens every once in a while).
Their night coverage is pretty reliable from Quebec through New England south to about Atlanta, west to about the Mississippi river. Everywhere else in the balance of the "38 states" and the rest of Canada is based on perfect conditions and a great radio.

The WNIR statement is flatly and completely impossible. "All an act"? Yah, just like most of commercial talk radio. That's why I can't stand it. Ridiculous statements for the gullible is their stock and trade.

First of all, I respect Joe Finan as a person and the career he had. My apologies if this post sounds a little harsh. He had a very interesting and successful career, worthy of being written into a book.

However the last couple years were dull and boring and lacking of hardly any entertainment value, and everyone realized it was time for Mr. Finan to retire except for him.

Maybe Mr. Finan should ask Bill Hall how things are at Clear Channel before he starts. I give it nine months before it gets replaced by another syndicated show.

The people who are allowing this tasteless display of a once-admired broadcaster losing his faculties should fry in hell. I also wonder if Joe has read the part of his severance agreement in which you have to agree never to say anything derogatory about Clear Channel, to get the check.
