Joe Henderson died Monday. Joe began his radio career as an announcer/DJ in Muskogee. During the Korean War he served as an annoucer with Armed Forces Radio in Korea. He returned to Muskogee, then left for Wichita Falls as PD for a station, that was sold to Raymond Ruff before he got there. Ruff assured Joe that he would have a job in Wichita Falls. Ruff transfered Joe to Tulsa when he and C. A. Sammons bought KTUL Radio and changed the calls to KELI. Joe was an air talent who was moved to sales, and eventually was promoted to General manager. Many of us who worked in Tulsa had the pleasure of working for Joe. I did from 1973 to 1974. Craig Kitch, who was Mike shannon at KELI in 1976, called me this morning to tell me about Joe's passing.
I talked to Joe several times as I was researching the rock and roll radio part of our exhibit on rock and roll in Okahoma at the Oklahoma History Center.
One of my favorite memories of Joe was his commercials for the Oklahoma division of Safeway. And voiced a number of others including OTASCO with Dick Schmitz.
His service is 2 p.m. Friday at Asbury United Methodist Church.
We'll miss you Joe.
