Joe Ligotti Returns

We mentioned Jerry Williams earlier and his brief 2002 show for WROL. I recall him being at "WMEX 1060" before then; consulting both the Boston Radio Archives and the book "Burning Up The Air", both mentioned how 1060 got those calls and relaunched as a talk station with Jerry, Margie Clapprood, and Upton Bell etc, going on in early 2000. A station not far from WBZ on the dial, but as "Burning Up the Air" notes, listeners had to struggle to pull in the signal, and Jerry's voice was thin, his reflexes slow, and his mind not as razor-sharp. It was discovered he had kidney disease...and he would be given medication, etc. The book said Jerry was only on for five shows.

Then came the short lived WROL stay and that last one show at RKO about a month or two before he died.

WROL will have an FM translator though, unlike "WMEX 1060", and unlike WROL in early 2000. The pirate will soon boot itself from the air*, finding it can't compete with the legit signal (just as with WJIB's repeater at 101.3) so maybe Ligotti will find some listeners that way. Not a powerhouse FM, but it'll be there for some listeners...

And Perry wants to do the same with WMEX 1510 once/if he manages to get back on...i.e., get an FM translator...we'll see if he does.

*--Big City left 101.3 after 12 days of fighting it out with Bittner's station. We'll see how long Big City 100.3 stays after fighting it out with WROL's new signal. Would think maybe they turn it on the same day as Ligotti debuts?

As I noted below, theyʼre already making plans—Big City has been on both 100.3 and 105.3 (Vibe 105's old frequency) since at least early Monday morning (not quite as strong as 100.3, but still enough to be in equal battle up here on the North Shore with 15-70's xltr down in Medford).

Thanks--I laughed when I saw a tweet wondering "who bought Big City?" (101.3) They must have tuned in and got Bittner's simulcast and figured that Big City was a legal station which got sold!

100.3 On The Air

Did you see the new logo in the link: "950AM WROL 100.3FM The Spirit Of Boston" (the old logo is just "950AM WROL The Spirit Of Boston").
At least as of 9:45pm tonight, the 100.3 xltr is on (noted it in Everett/Medford, on the Commuter rail, haven't checked signal at South Station yet).

We'll see if the FM translator for WROL turns on today, as I think Ligotti starts today. Also Fybush's North East Radio Watch says if Perry gets WMEX sale approved he also is applying for an FM translator...in a South Shore city, not far away on the dial from the translators for WJIB and WMRC...

WROL website says Ligotti show starts tomorrow, Feb 6..joining shows like Life at the Cross Roads, Prophecy Today...--and Dennis Praeger, who had been on WBIX 1260.

What's the difference between the Joe Ligotti show and the Titanic?

( The Titanic had a band)
I bet this doesn't last as long as his stint on WMEX...

Oh the humanity !

I feel like Joe deserves some place on the radio. Not sure what kind of show...if he needs a co-host, or what.

He is relatively green when it comes to managing his image and his career.

I thought the Joe and Huggy thing worked, because Huggy was more of a radio guy and could ease the rough edges, and follow a format to maintain audience.

A post on FB says WROL's new FM translator is getting interference from WHEB, even near to the translator's antenna. The pirate has moved to 105.3 and even has a Big City 105.3 logo via Instagram

The guy says nothing I want to hear. But I have to give him credit for making some kind of name for himself simply by being fat, loud and obnoxious.

The guy says nothing I want to hear.

He can be funny, witty, self-deprecating, and because he is not a radio guy, does not fall into predictable patterns.

I think that's what I like, that he's not predictable.

Plus, I am somewhat conservative, so I also like hearing his E. Boston-take on things.

I met him a couple of times (once by accident) and he was cordial, friendly and nice....and I got the impression he would give you the (very large) shirt off his back if you needed it.

His "guy from Boston" videos are a little obnoxious....but having met him and listening to him, I don't think that's his real personality.

He needs some support system....like a good PD or Producer, to guide him in the right direction.

Like many people who make a name for themselves, left to their own vices....they fall into a minefield they don't know how to navigate safely.

When I got to North Station and then walking through South Station, I think they were dead carrier, but then in the PO next door I didnʼt here anything. So, I donʼt know if they shut off or if they are just unreceivable at South Station (like the Medford 105.3 xltr).

I know LPFM's are not protected from a Licensed Class (X) station, heck I would bet an existing Class D FM still is higher up on the food chain, but I doubt a Translator is going to get much sympathy from the FCC interference from a Class B FM where the translator is on the edge of their 50 Dbu protected coverage.

In the winter, when the leaves are off the trees, FM covers more area IMHO

I guess WVCA-LP 88.3 Newbury orig was to share the freq with Boxford's WBMT but tried to move to Seabrook NH and 88.1 (to themselves) but they got denied.

RadioInsight: "New England Broadcasting Edu. Group’s 2016 application to relocate 88.3 WVCA Newbury MA to 88.1 Seabrook NH has been dismissed. WVCA filed the application in an attempt to break its time-share with 88.3 WBMT Boxford MA as the facilities would no longer overlap..."

WBMT? If that is the HS station I am thinking of, their license should have been deleted a decade ago, the fact they pulled that sh*t off makes the FCC look like a joke

I agree his radio persona is more of an act

Unfortunately, he is not going to get that at WROL. They are going to take his check point him to the studio and wish him luck. They are probably providing a board operator. I would be interested to hear what those who tune in to WROL for DR. James Dobson's Focus on the Family show or the other religious offerings who hear Ligotii think.
