Along with Harry Harrison for a stretch there.
Joe went on in later years to host mornings at WHUD/Peekskill for a decade or so,
and was tragically killed in an auto accident (at age 90) after his retirement.
Remember him well. JOB was the first DJ I heard when I was given a Zenith AM-FM for my 5th birthday in Sept '61. He and WMCA remained favorites throught the 60's till he left for WNBC in 1968. At that point he had been with WMCA for some 32 years.
With O'Brien as morning man WMCA was consistantly at, or near the top through most of the sixties. I remember in 1965 talking to friends who worked on a show called Hullabaloo, taped in NBC in Brooklyn, there was a huge age difference between cast and crew yet everyone knew and liked O'Brien's show.
His end was remarkable and tragic, His former WMCA PD Ruth Meyer was visiting him and attending concerts at Tanglewood, Joe O'Brien was killed in an auto accident driving himself and Mrs. Meyer home. What a terrible and sad ending to their long friendship.
