On his show today, Pags announced that he would no longer host "The Weekend" after 12 years so that he can spend more time with family. His weekday show will be unaffected. It is unknown who will take over the weekend, but probably someone up and coming. Thoughts?

Joe Pags refocuses on the Weekday

I don't know about the weekend show. But his weekday show is syndicated by Premiere and will end up in Seattle, if 1090 does become Talk. That would be a big boost for him.
When "The Weekend" started, it was with rotating hosts from the then Clear Channel stable, and as i recall, that was an outgrowth of the aftermath of 9/11, when CC fed talk on the weekends for its own stations that didn't have local hosts to cover weekends when breaking news was happening. WLW's Mike McConnell took the permanent duties of the show, which was then syndicated outside of Clear Channel/iHeart. McConnell left when he also left WLW for WGN in Chicago (he returned to WLW after a 4 year stint at WGN). It's possible, but not probable for McConnell to return (my guess would be that 5 mornings a week is plenty). They could do rotating hosts but there aren't as many as there were in the early 00s), pick a successor or cancel the show.
Joe's weekday show is actually syndicated by Compass Networks. "The Weekend" is syndicated by Premiere.

Yes, I've been a long time listener to McConnell. He has very limited time to do talk on the morning show.
Joe Pags hosts afternoons on 1200 WOAI San Antonio, which could be considered the "flagship station" of iHeartMedia, with its corporate offices in San Antonio. When iHeart used to be called "Clear Channel Communications," WOAI was the clear channel station referred to in the title. As mentioned above, Pags' show is syndicated, not by Premiere/iHeart, but by Compass. His affiliate list is fairly modest, a few small-market talk stations owned by iHeart and other companies. Some take the show live and others use it tape-delayed for evenings.
I'm not sure why he was doing a separate show for weekend syndication. Why not just take excerpts from his weekday shows? Unless Premiere Networks/iHeart wanted different material than his weekday show distributed by a different syndicator? I assume he recorded this weekend show on Fridays, since it airs at various times on Saturdays & Sundays on affiliates. So I'm skeptical about his saying he was dropping his weekend show to spend more time with family. My guess is he recorded it at noon on Fridays, just before doing his live Friday afternoon show on WOAI and Compass.
For many years, Rush did a show called "The Rush Limbaugh Weekend News Roundup." But it was just material from his Thursday and Friday shows. Nothing was original for his weekend show.

I don't know about Pag, but "The Weekend" in both incarnations (McConnell and rotating hosts), it was broadcast live 12n-3pm Saturdays, but many stations (sometimes even McConnell's flagship WLW depending on sports commitments) delayed it. I would think that would have continued with Pags.
I've heard Pags in the morning (on KDFD, I think), in the afternoon (KGAB), and in the evening (WOAI). It's hard to keep track anymore, but yes stations time delay his program it seems
Prior to his WOAI show being syndicated, he hosted a separate morning drive talk program on a station in Houston, while both shows were live they did share some content like re-airing an interview with a Senator, Congressman, POTUS candidate, etc that would be of interest to San Antonio and Houston listeners.
I am that way too. I have one show with Compass, and do work for SuiteRadio (and even a little side-hustle with Cumulus too.) Given the climate of radio today, I seriously doubt ANYBODY would just jump right up and tell an independent content provider they can't shop their wares to other companies-especially if their "primary" syndicator was offered the show first and turned it down.
