Joe Starkey to retire from announcing Cal Bears games

Note Joe Starkey was also known for calling 49ers games on the radio and at one point was a sports anchor at KGO-AM 810 for drive time news.

Here is Joe Starkey when he also did call games for KGO-AM.

Starkey, who will turn 81 in October, began calling Cal games for KGO-810 in 1975, when Mike White was the Bears’ coach and their star players included Chuck Muncie, Wesley Walker and Joe Roth.

He has been on been on the mic for 538 of the 545 Cal football contests since he began, calling his 500th Cal game against Oregon on Sept. 29, 2018.

“Nearly 50 years of calling Cal football games . . . just a legend in the Cal community,” said Bears coach Justin Wilcox, who was born the same year Starkey began his run in Berkeley.

I remember him most for saying "Yikes!" when referring to the mice the exterminator found in his home. He's had that ad forever.
