Joe Starkey

Any word on Joe Starkey leaving the 49ers radio broadcasts?

According to KPIX news tonight, he IS leaving the Niners broadcast.

http://www.sf49ers.com has audio from KNBR today (12-18) with Joe announcing his retirement
from 49er broadcasts after this year. Click on the "Video" portion on the middle-right of the home
page and you'll see the link, "Joe Starkey on KNBR 12/18/08"

Re: Joe Starkey Out As Voice Of 49ers

About fifteen minutes after KNBR broke the news Thursday afternoon, I heard from a generally quasi-reliable, semi-trustworthy (sometimes) source who knows Joe ... that person told me that Joe didn't "retire." He was asked to choose between doing Cal games or doing Niners games, but not both.

Who did the asking? It was heavily inferred during our conversation that Andy Dolich, the 49ers chief operating officer, was responsible. (Perhaps a real journalist might give Mr. Dolich a call to confirm...)

Joe chose to stay with Cal, and was incredibly gracious and classy on KNBR yesterday explaining his thought process.

It's going to be a tough job to replace Joe. I couldn't think of any good first-line candidates off the top of my head, but Damon Bruce, sitting in for Gary Rabbinovich on KNBR this morning, postulated that if the Niners can't swipe Greg Papa from the Raiders, Ted Robinson would be an outstanding #1 guy. I couldn't agree more.

Gary Plummer will remain as color analyst on 49ers broadcasts, by the way.

Not a chance with Papa, but Robinson lives in the area and may eventually tire of commuting to London and New York for Wimbeldon and the US Open tennis.
Another I'd suggest would be Barry Tompkins. And could Joe Fonzi be better with a little notice next time?

Ted would not give up the US Open and Wimbledon gigs. They are too high profile. IF he wanted to 49ers games, Im sure something could be worked out to let him do the US Open. Wimbledon is in the summer and wouldnt conflict.

How would you know not a chance with Papa? You have inside info or somethin'? ::)

I think the world of Joe Fonzi, but what's his PBP background? I thought he was amazingly good on the two broadcasts he did for the 49ers -- amazing even more because he did it on virtually no notice at all.

Barry Tompkins ... a brilliant choice. Talented, smart, funny -- I like that pick.

Now, if the Raiders could only get an analyst to work alongside Greg Papa who doesn't bring the broadcast to an absolute crashing halt every time he opens his mouth. Greg is one of the two or three best radio play-by-play guys doing NFL games, and he earns every single penny he's making on the Raiders broadcasts. Am I guessing correctly that Mr. Davis handpicked Tom ("Uh") Flores for that job?

Joe Starkey is obviously a nice guy with a good heart...But, I have to say I've never liked his airwork...always reminded me of Kermit the Frog. Personally, I'm glad he'll be off the Niner broadcasts. However, I think his style, whether I like it or not, works very well with Cal...

Best of luck to him...

Damon Bruce (subbing for Gary Radnich) on KNBR yesterday made it sound as if Ted Robinson has the 49ers job.
