Joel Hollander: On The Offense, Ok? Not The Defense, Ok?

Joel Hollander

I'm with u. he made some good points. we may not like or even agree with what they did in nyc or Chicago but it's hard to argue their rationale.

Re: Joel Hollander - Reality Check time.

People, listen up.

Most of what he said makes sense. They did not see the Oldies format fit in their plans and gone. That is fact. And this is about the only praise his rant gets.

That statement was made specifically to make the investors happy. Listeners mean squat, sorry this is the reality of it. The industry is in major trouble as investors need to keep seeing growth and returns. Just like the Prez got on TV and gave his pep talk with strong words, so did Mr Hollander.

But stupidity reigns. That arrogant drivel is exactly what advertising agencies want to hear. (sarcasm). The only people peed on were not listeners but advertisers. His lil speech did not speak of the millions lost the 1st week alone after the flip, on JMK.

Wow the tone of his interview was almost the same tone that the production of JACK gives off. They must REALLY be taking it seriously!!!!!!!!! Are they going to rename their corporation Jack too?

Reality workshop over.

Good analysis, Z. And let`s help Hollander define terms. When
he speaks of "bleeding," that refers specifically to the old
`JMK demo, which was laden with TOO MANY 50+ listeners. That`s
why `CKG was spared, the ratings and revenue may be lackluster
(certainly when compared to `JMK), but `CKG`s demo is younger
with a greater concentration in that cherished 25-54 demo.

When Hollander talks about the "goddam foot on your neck" and
having the "balls" to make the change, well, he`s referring to
the radio messsage boards, specifically this one in Chicago
and the New York Radio Message Board where the WCBS-FM board
continues three and a half weeks after the "flip." What this
means is, never in a million years, did Infinity expect the
massive negative backlash from the Internet and the daily
newspapers (see Richard Roeper`s Tuesday column in the Sun-
Times for further documentation) in both markets. But, Hollander
maintains, no matter what the listeners may think and feel,
that`s secondary, because the great thinkers in the executive
suite will ultimately determine what`s best for you. So, you
out in their radioland, sit back and listen to your radios and
shut up.

WJMK Liner: "Hey Robert Feder, don't tell us what to play or else we're gonna change your name to Jack."

Don't know if that has anything to do with the interview or not. Heard it this afternoon.

I also swear I cought someone doing a remote somewhere before a stopset.

You can attract more flies with honey than you can with vinegar. Mr. Hollander just brought out the fly swatter.

In my honest opinion, this is a way to lose even more people to sattelite and I-pods. What I don't understand is why this "f-you" attitude towards the listener exists if they are trying to keep people interested in radio. Mr. Hollander and "Jack" are not giving me any reason to tune to their station. Nor are they giving me any desire to shop their advertisers.

Who really buys stuff that they hear on the radio anyhow? I'd still go to McDonald's even if there were no commercials. Do they really think that bombarding us with 200+ car commercials are going to make people listen? NO! In the last 5 years, I have heard thousands of cell-phone commercials, but bought only 1 phone!!!

HOW MUCH DOES THE LISTENER VALUE THE COMMERCIALS?

Eventually, attitudes like this will come back to haunt them. What is this saying to the advertisers? If the listeners are not that important, who would want to advertise if listeners are leaving? Who will want to spend hard earned money to buy HD compatible radios to hear Infinity stations? Only those who don't know any better.

Sincerly,

If I want variety hits, I'm no longer going to tune to 104.3FM. I will now be exclusively tuning to 92.7FM for the format. I get what the guy is saying but he doesn't have to be such a jerk about it. As a LONGTIME listener to WJMK as an oldies format, after reading that interview, I feel like I've been told "Fu** You"

The real FU** will come when instead of earning 16 million the station bills less than 8 million and the shareholders show Mr. Hollander the door! He is feeling the heat in a big way. His comments stink on ice!

And you basically have been told this. Now I won't argue with you on that the goals and purposes of radio stations is to make money by playing commercials--that's it.....they are not here to play your favorite music. It's a business. Okay, that's fine....but you don't make public this type of attitude.

Would the CEO of Target stores publicly say something like, we are no longer going to have sales...my stores are bleeding and I'm going to fix this by discontinuing all sales, regardless of the public outcry for sales. I do not apologize for this, oh well, this is life...?

I don't think so....that would be suicide. Even though Target is really out to make money and that's it.....you have to have good "P.R."...make the customer think your purpose is to serve them, not make money.<P ID="signature">______________

That one and a couple of others with a similar tone came on mentioning Feder (and one mentioning Roeper, besides the Ebert/Roeper liner) for the first time yesterday late-morning-early afternoon. Snarky Image Guy must've fired up his ISDN yesterday morning after they faxed/E-mailed him the copy.

They've been doing ticket giveaways for the Balloon Fest in Lisle this weekend from various western suburb stores, which was probably a deal made before the format switch (especially considering that Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and the Rascals are the headliners). Where on the old format we'd be hearing Biondi or one of the other jocks doing the pitch, instead it's probably an intern, although he doesn't sound bad. I'd be curious what sort of response the prize patrol is getting when people see the Jack FM signs.
