Joel Osteen to Buy KB?

In a privately written blog, my friend Bill saw some mention of a Joel Osteen making plans to puchase several large AM signals from major broadcasters. "...Included in the offer to buy are 5 large market signals in Dallas (KVCE?) Batimore (WVIE?) Buffalo (WWKB?) Los Angeles/San Diego (KBLA?) and San Fransisco (KTRB?)"

How true is this, and what will he do with these stations? Any chance that he might go oldies?

Joel Scott Hayley Osteen (born March 5, 1963[1] in Houston, Texas) is the senior pastor of Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas, North America’s largest and 2006's fastest growing church, averaging more than 47,000 attendees at weekly services.

I don't think Oldies is in his future.

Church Chill

'KB going religion?

Talk about "Back to the Future"...

I guess it would get Entercom off the hook for the big electric bill. I doubt that libtalk is paying that now. And, it would keep 'KB from competing with WBEN.

If it happens, it will be a sad chapter for a legendary signal.

Mr. Osteen was featured October 14th on CBS' 60 Minutes. He preaches a revisionist Christian message which doesn't always square with other televangelists.

Here's what one fundamentalist has to say. Here's an opinion from a moderate theological blogger.

Osteen's essential message is "Money is good, God wants you to have your share, so be good and you'll get good." This vaguely calls to mind the Reverend Ike ("You must have mind power!") or Adam Clayton Powell ("There is no black power unless you have green power.")

The Reverend Osteen has quite a multi-media empire. He could probably pay for KB and the other blow torches with the money that falls out of his pant's cuffs when he hangs them up at night. Entercom likely would be thrilled to have him take KB off their hands at a premium price. At the rate KB is going, it wouldn't be much of a loss to many people, although sad nonetheless.

Imagine, the "Well Known Bible Worker" returning to its roots. Maybe Osteen could buy the call letters back. Considering Granite's miserable financial condition, they'd be more than happy to sell him the rights to WKBW.

Is there some kind of pattern that anyone can see here? I sort of see LA, and San Fransisco and some station in Dallas..but ..Why BUFFALO and BALTIMORE? I put these stations up on radiolocator and tried to see if there was some kind of "master plan" that would cover the whole country, and all I can see is reasonably good signals in markets that could net some income..but is there someone out there that thinks this is just sub-standard stations that could be bought reasonably cheap..except KB. Great night signal even with IBOC..and that crazy San Fransisco station looks as though it has potential, but KVCE?? Jeesh a year or so ago Mr Osteen had made mention that he would love to be able to do a radio talk show to reach people with his "Potential for Prosperity" message..maybe this is his "Mr Microphone"..and (gulp) KBLA??? Pleeez!

Maybe he should consider the Crawford group, while he's at it... Plus, he could preach in HD!

Once they go religious they will be religious stations FOREVER. When or if these people get rid of them they just sell them off to another religious company and you'll never hear anything but bible thumping, fire & brimstone preachers on them for eternity!

I wouldn't be surprised if Granite throws in Ch. 7 with that call letter deal. Now THAT would be fun to watch: Mike Randall would have to shave off that 'stache, Joanna and Bridget would have to wear more frilly things and Jennifer, Ginger, Julie et. al. would be prohibited from wearing pants---that is, in favor of below-the-knee dresses.

Have ya seen a Joel Osteen sermon lately?

I loved KB as much as anyone. It really was a big influence on me. You can ask any of the people in our Blasdell neighborhood. Growing up I usually had a transistor radio in my hand!

KB doesn't matter these days, it's not coming back. It took me a long time to realize that. The oldies format was great while it lasted, I really enjoyed it even though it was a shadow of the former great station. Religion, or whatever, it doesn't really matter what they do with it now.

For now I'm having a good time listening to XM. They cover the entire country! I guess in time that too will change.

If by oldies you mean "The Bible-Thumping Beatles" and "The Rolling Brimstones", then yes.

No, I have not seen a Joel Osteen "sermon". I'm not in the habit of listening to charlatans and hucksters. Bad enough we have to put up with Ernest Angley where I live.

Really? Does your radio not have an OFF/ON switch? There are two many choices out there in the radio spectrum for anybody to make that kind of complaint.

Nobody is forced to listen to anything he/she doesn't want to listen to. And if you can't find anything on the radio that appeals to you, turn it off and read a book.

Besides, no matter what its programming and format, it's the marketplace that determines a radio station's prospects of success or failure.

I'd much rather see Claude Osteen buy 'KB. He was pretty good relief pitcher in his day. Maybe that would mean SOME station in Buffalo would carry the World Series!

Oh well, maybe we can hope that someday history will REALLY repeat itself, and Osteen's kid will decide to turn it into a hot hits flamethrower with great personalities again...

Well, you can dream, can't you? ;-)

Joel Osteen and/or the Lakewood Church owned Channel 55 in Houston for a number of years (KTBU--licensed to Conroe, Texas) but sold it recently to the America One group. Of course the station showed Lakewood Church broadcasts, but it was not a religious station and showed old sitcoms as an independent station. The station also broadcast the Houston Rockets at one point. So he has experience in broadcasting and probably the money from the sale of the TV station to use for radio. The TV station did not do too well in Houston because it is licensed to Conroe about 40 miles north of the city and reception in the south parts of town is poor and some cable companies in the southern Houston area such as Galveston if I recall correct) did not carry channel 55. I would expect that radio stations wouldbe religious though. Lakewood Church is the largest church in the USA==--it holds services in the old Summit, the basketball arena where the Rockets played before the Toyota Center was built.

motivational speaker would be a better description

exactly.
I wouldn't fear "fire and brimstone" and "hellfire and damnation" if he had a station near yall like YEKIMI fears.

Dear God in Heaven......save us now!

Amen
