Jerry Barmash of FishBowlNY has a new interview with Joel Salkowitz, who has "entered into an agreement as Sound Ideas Programming Consultants to distribute and consult the Pulse CHR/Dance format to radio," he writes. The article also states: "Salkowitz and his syndicator are in talks to add their format in other markets, including New York."

"The first affiliate is The Vibe KVBE-FM in Las Vegas." which he is only advising on "The Dance/CHR format that is referred to as the "Pulse format" continues to be a VIABLE OPTION in New York that WOULD achieve superior ratings than some of the current formats on the air here," Salkowitz admits.

Personally, I'd rather hear ANOTHER dance station enter into this market with its own unique presentation.

Pulse 87 had its run from February 2008 to October 2009 and, yes, I was supportive of it. But I've also seen how CRAZY people were, in a negative fashion, after PartyFM came in on 87.7 and people were hypercritical of it because it WASN'T Pulse.

Each dance oriented station at its given time in NYC had a unique presentation of the format. Pulse has had their opportunity but I'd personally rather hear a new presentation this time around. And in this case, there has to be more "rhythmic" tracks in there to make things work so that dance in itself can grow.

If some Pulse jocks get on board with such a new station, that's great...but for the sake of this market, it would be better for the music if something entirely new came along the FM dial with a more current leaning presentation....IMHO.

Let's be clear here about how this move-in game is played.

I don't believe for one minute that Cox has any intention of operating 96.7 from New Rochelle itself, or that Cumulus would operate 103.9 from the Bronx as a standalone NYC signal. The whole idea behind these move-ins was to sell them to someone else for big money. It made sense a few years ago, when the market was red-hot and there were actually buyers with cash willing to pay $60 million for a rimshot class A signal.

The earth has shifted since then. Those deep-pocketed buyers have dried up. No buyer has surfaced for WFAS-FM, much less for WCTZ. Cox and Cumulus are keeping the application processes alive for both signals, but they're not going to emerge as standalone NYC commercial signals under those owners, ever.

*If* the 96.7 move to New Rochelle is ever consummated, or if 103.9 ever gets licensed in the Bronx, it will be under a new owner, and if present trends are any indication, that owner is as likely to be K-Love as anything else. And if by some remote chance either station ends up programming dance music (or pretty much any other English-language format anywhere close to the mainstream), it will be the new owner, not Cox or Cumulus, making that decision...which makes this a very hypothetical hypothetical.

Which makes me sad - mainly because I have a friend who works at WFAS, and I would hate to see people loose their jobs to off the bird programming like K-Love...as well as loose a local station like WFAS that does a decent job of serving the community (John Tesh at night notwithstanding).

But with the economy, I doubt there are many people willing to pay the pricetag Cumulus or Cox wants for the move in signals.

That is true. Much easier to buy into satellite programming and "brand" it locally without having to hire staff versus trying to do a new format, OF ANY GENRE, especially if you are a "rimshot".

Heck, I'm still pleading for SOME station to try out a dance/rhythmic format. Anything above 92.1 and definitely something that stays current leaning (cannot stress that enough).

OK, so 96.7 and 103.9 may be operated by new owners should the move happen. As long as they move closer to the city, what would displease me if some religious outfit takes hold of either of them or both. However, it also means two signals that can be used for formats that many want. How much are they worth now?
