Joel Whitburn Music Database

Hi there everyone!

Just wondering if anyone here subscribes to Joel Whitburn's Music Vault Database. And if so, do they find it worth the money? I'm a "newbie" MD for an AC/HOT AC hybrid, and am looking for research wherever I can get it!

Thanks!

Anyone? His latest book only goes to 2006, so I was wondering if it would be a good resource to refresh my memory on how songs from 2006 to 2010 charted, and for how long. Does it stay that current?

I can't answer your direct question...but I've always wondered about the Whitburn book info.

The Whitburn book was one of the most "misplaced" books at a radio station. Looks like everyone wanted a copy. It was so complete, and easy to read.

This was all before the internet....and now I wonder if there is an online directory somewhat similar to the Whitburn book...except online (and free of course).

There are sites for movies (imdb.com) and sites for books (Amazon.com)...and most of the information is out and open to the public.

Why hasn't someone put this information online in some sort of database format?

(Or has someone, and I don't know about it yet?) ;-)

I can imagine Whitburn (and his people) would try to figure out a way to make some dollars off of it (with a subscription?), but it's hard to imagine someone didn't put all this information on the web for free.

What do you and your station use online when trying to find out past chart/performance data, and discographies?

Is there a complete source somewhere?

Thanks!

The latest Whitburn release is 2009. If you type in the name of that famous music chart magazine and hot 100 year end charts on goog you should find what you our looking for. But, I would purchase the Whitburn book.

That is hardly the same thing...

Ummm..you'll be hard pressed to find past weekly AC charts unless you saved your archives. So this is the next best thing. If you are a PD or MD you would know that. ::)

His Top Pop Singles book goes to 2010, it was just released this year.

And $9.95 for 50 searches or credits, can add up really fast. I just buy the book every 5-10 years or so.
