Joey Reynolds fired

Those are the rumors. Sad to see him go.

Rumor came from a friend in Los Angeles. So I don't know if the station in LA is just getting rid of him or if Joey's whole show is ending.

"This just in: they're picking up "Coast To Coast" with George Noury, after Citadel kicked this popular program off WABC, so they could keep the syndication dollars in the family. C2C had loads of rabid fans, and it's good that it's back for them... but WOR has plenty of low-rated K-R-A-P in other dayparts that could just as easily go to see the Baby Jesus, to be replaced by Joey, and no one would miss it.

Allan Sniffen says on his website that the final Joey Reynolds show will be Friday, April 2. So it's not like he's being asked to hang up his headphones just yet.

So, let's see: first, WOR clears two hours of Glenn Beck, then eventually runs the entire show; now, they pick up Noory's Coast To Coast show. You know, it's been a long time since "chuckydoll" has been lurking these boards. Hey, Chuck, what was that you said about the Buckleys not wanting to do business with Clear Channel again?

Yes, I found it: this is what I'm talking about:

Maybe Glenn Beck can finally get cleared in New York!

When hell freezes over. Beck is syndicated by a division of Clear Channel -- and Buckley does not do business with Clear Channel.

Signed, chuckydoll - last active, July 2008.

"Coast To Coast" is like a fungus that just keeps spreading. Don't they think we just might want to listen to something else?

Incredibly disappointing. And it seems odd to me that despite the syndication of his show, WOR would pull the plug altogether. Nevertheless, 14 years is a good run for a good show.

What are the chances of Joey being picked up elsewhere and/or syndicated?

Also, George Noory? Is his show really that necessary?

Coast to Coast is slowly becoming the only show one can hear at night, their should be one coast to coast station per state and it should be a 50KWer

On the contrary; I believe brokered preacher Brother R.G. Stair has built himself a nice little syndicated network for his overnight show! ;D

Exactly. It's like walking down a street where all the businesses are the same: either banks or tarot card readers.

Allan Sniffen at the New York Radio Message Board says "April 2nd will be the last broadcast of the Joey Reynolds overnight show that has been airing on both WOR and the WOR Network." Guess that means Joey will be leaving KB. Again.
This time without nailing his shoes to the PDs door with a note reading "fill these."

Could he still hold court on the WOR Network? Prob'ly not, but you never know. The guy's still viable. Could Entercom sign Joey for live origination all-nite on 1520 WWKB, the 50kw flamethrower that hits 17 states, two coutries and all the ships at sea? Syndicate Reynolds out of Buffalo. He could do the show on 'KB using ISDN from his living room and be heard in NYC almost as well as if he was on WOR.

Joey Reynolds is not a "radio show" in New York. He's an irreplaceable institution. Hey, WABC! Now that Buckley Broadcasting has further ??? ??? abandoned any pretense of "serving the community", how 'bout picking up the hottest franchise in overnight radio as a lead-in to "Red-Eye?"

And WOR VP/GM Jerry Crowley twists the knife in Joey's back with this quote: "We are so excited to welcome GEORGE and COAST TO COAST AM, the most-popular overnight radio show in the country, back to the NEW YORK airwaves on WOR..." Yeah, I'm sure Joey would be pleased to hear that!

WOR do everyone a favor and hit the sign off at midnight and turn off the lights and transmitter. We don't need another station running Coast To Coast AM. Is it any wonder the show does so well? There isn't anything else out there. Joey's show was an oasis in a sea of mediocracy.

Meanwhile, here's what some of Joey's Facebook friends are saying:

Michael Miranda: "Coast to Coast are they kidding? Yours was the only escape from that stupid show. This is a perfect example of what's wrong with radio today."

Gil Gross (from ABC): "I am bummed my friend. There are few places on the radio where I feel as if I'm spending time with a genuine human being and not a carnival barker."

And veteran DJ Famous Amos: "Joey!! Hey, ain't management loyalty awesome? <g>"

Gil's primary job these days is as afternoon talk host at Citadel's KGO/810 in San Francisco (an ex-ABC station, of course).

Which leads me to wonder if Citadel plans to clear Doug McIntyre in SF.  He wouldn't be on KGO, of course, since they run a live, local overnight (and late night) block with John Rothmann and Ray Taliaferro, and even with Citadel's financial situation that probably isn't going away.  They just hired weekender Rothmann for the full-time 10 PM-1 AM (PT) slot.  But sister KSFO/560 could run him.

I just looked, and KSFO runs C2C. I presume that could hop to CC's KNEW/910 if Citadel decided to run "Red Eye" on KSFO.

As far as Mr. Reynolds goes...that's a sad story.

I've never really heard much of his WOR show - our local WOR Radio Network affiliate is a puny daytimer. But that station accidentally ran him one morning instead of TRN's Mancow, I presume on a WOR Radio Network refeed because their automation didn't kick it over to TRN in the morning. (It was a Monday, and the station runs a lot of WOR content on weekends.)

In the end, there may be room for just one high-profile widely syndicated alternative to C2C and the sports networks, and "Red Eye" may be it due to Citadel's ownership stake putting it on in large markets like NY and LA.

Power-station WWKB 1520 has Joey in the AM?
the most-popular overnight radio show in the country
I noticed were WLS has cut George back to a couple of hours. They are going with a conservative truckers show out of Dallas.

I hope he pulls another "Midnight Hour" incident on his way out the door. Buckley didn't own WDRC when he did it last time, but it would sure be fitting in this case.

:) I never up that late but one night I was and turned Joey Reynolds on, I have met him many times :) Joey is a nice guy and very funny, I wish him The Best!!! He should land somewhere if he wants too. ;D

Yeah, that was another Citahell-mandated decision, as "Midnight Trucking Radio Network" is based out of WBAP/Dallas (although syndicated by Jones/D-G). WMAL/DC also is forced to wedge C2C from 12a-3a, and "Midnight Trucking" from 3a-5a.

That might end, however, if both WMAL and WLS are mandated to carry Red Eye instead. I doubt that either WBAP or WJR/Detroit (a longtime "Midnight Trucking" affil dating back to the Bill Mack days) will be made to carry Red Eye at all.
