Joey Reynolds' TV Show Is On The Air

For those of you wondering, Joey Reynolds' long-awaited TV show on WNBC's New York Nonstop subchannel debuted this week.

Reynolds, last heard in the overnights on WOR before they went "Coast To Coast," talks about his new project, as well as being back with NBC for the first time since the 80's, when he was at the now-defunct WNBC Radio:

In this excerpt in which he describes his new TV show, he appears to take a swipe at Howard Stern and Jay Leno:

"The connectivity is what makes this different than most of the other shows because I’m going to be connected to people in a very interesting human fashion. In other words, I’m not sending Stuttering John outside and I’m not sending a ‘Jaywalk,’ I’m going out myself."

Ouch!

The cynic in me reads this as we have no budget for staff so I've got to do this stuff myself.

I may be biased as I was a member of Joey's team at 66 WNNNNBC-AM, but I found the New York Non-Stop With Joey Reynold's show on TV last night to be refreshing. No, he doesn't have a studio audience screaming like loons when told to, nor did it have the host jumping up and down like he's got a nervous tick or on some kind of speed like a certain red-headed host, nor does he have the pre-scripted, yada yada, "Let's talk about my vacation in Bali and OH, I have a movie coming out" kind of interview.

It's more REAL.

Having comedian Stewie Stone come on a talk about his cancer, while maintaining his borscht-belt humor intact, combined with a YOUNG comedian to grab MULTI-generations was a refreshing change of pace. I also think Joey's very relaxed, yet more prepared than ever interviewing-style to be pleasing for that time of night.

I know Joey very well, and I KNOW he's wanted this for a LONG time. Now he's got it...and I think that NBCUniversal (as they are officially called starting today with no space between the NBC and Universal--so are they NBCU now?) will let this show find its niche. It's VERY New York and while Joey ain't a young man, he certainly knows HOW to find younger INTERESTING people in his mix of conversation to make it a much more demographic pleasing program. Not all OLD folks, yet not all young personalities that the older generations don't know or care about. I think the MIX may be the winning ticket.

That MAY be what is wrong with most late night TV now. They are ALL going for current A-listers with NOTHING to say and nothing to offer except their celebrity! Let the show find its legs. I liked it...and Joey will make this work. Yeah...he's my pal and mentor, but I know what I like...and this suits ME just fine at that time of night. Thankfully he's not twitching like Craig, jumping up and down like Conan, not being snarky like Letterman, and not moving back and forth like Leno. He's not a flashy LOUD guy like George Lopez, nor as inside or as stoic as Jimmy Kimmel, nor as green as Fallon. It's LOCAL and almost live. I think Joey's man on the street skills are among his best. NOBODY is as spontaneous. My two cents.

Break some more legs Joey, and BE BIG!
