Joey Reynolds Update

Thanks for passing that along. Wow, at long last! Does anyone know why the delay? From listening to him I get the idea he has always wanted to do television. Will there be a webcast for those of us not in NYC?

Actually he did TV about 45 years ago though he might not be very proud of it.

The only thing I remember is him doing "Rats In My Room" With Danny on TV. It was probably the Children's Telethon.

Joey had polarizing appeal, you either loved him or hated him but you were aware of him. I always connected with his sense of humor and enjoyed his funny way of looking at everyday things.

He did have one of the first national radio shows. It was called "Satellite Live" an interview type show. I think he did a good job with it.

IIRC, for awhile back in the mid 60s he had a weekly Saturday afternoon show on Channel 7, geared for his teenage radio audience.

Joey had a top notch theme song recorded by the Four Seasons. Part of the lyrics include,
"on TV and radio". The TV wording was almost certainly a reference to the weekly show on Channel 7.

One interesting question is whether the TV station is paying Joey or vice versa.

Another is whether the TV program will be seen in other markets besides New York City. I think there's an audience for a live allnight variety program instead of the endless infomercials for owning your own gym equipment.

I believe this channel is also available on IVI.TV.

As I remember that 4 Seasons jingle said "on KB" and was later overdubbed to "on TV" when he was I think in Colorado.

If I remember correctly, the original version of the song said "on POP" which was a reference to Hartford's WPOP, which is where Joey worked when he first played "Sherry."

You couldn't get much bigger with a theme song and hit group in those just-barely-pre-Beatles days. Sherry, being the first major hit and Big Girls Don't Cry being the Four Seasons' follow-up, Reynolds was one of the first to play the songs and the FS's producer was more than happy to re-pay the favor with a theme song, heard every night shortly after the Danny-Joey crossover on the 50 thousand watt flamethrower. And BTW, Joey looks great for his age. Damn good for 60 ;) ! <Rimshot, grey Fidelipac with rattling metal tension bar and worn pads.>

Joey's TV show ran Saturday afternoon on WKBW-TV. I just barely remember seeing the McCoys lip synch Hang On Sloopy on his show. And of course, Joey's legendary exit from KB, with his shoes reportedly nailed to the KB PD's door and a note "fill these!" Reynolds' firing allegedly came after an on-the-air remark about F-Troop's Forrest Tucker during a Variety Club Telethon. F-Troop might have been the forerunner and TV sanitized version of Blazing Saddles. Then on to WJBK, Detroit.

Today, Reynolds Telethon shtick would seem tame and harmless compared to Ricky Gervais' appearance at the Golden Globe Awards. Didn't see The Globes or Gervais, but when I read the accounts, I thought of the great humorist Homer Simpson who once remarked, "It's funny cuz it's true." I worked with Joey during his many fill-in stints at WHTT and found him to be a genuinely good guy.

Just thinking...if the Four Seasons updated Joey's theme each time he moved to another station, they would have been so busy in the studio they probably never would have had time to record their hits.

Sixty, huh?  That means Joey was probably all of 13 during his glory years at KB!

Quite an accomplishment for a young teenager!  Love you, Joey...mean it!

I take it "New York Nonstop" is actually WNBC-TV's HD-2 channel...the giveaway being the midnight start time, when the main NBC channel would be airing Leno?

Joey became good friends with Bob Crewe and Frankie Valli so getting jingles done for a few stations was no problem whenever the group was in the studio recording.

The ultimate Four Seasons radio theme was the one they produced for Cousin Brucie who was on WABC at the time. The tune and lyrics were original and the production was good enough to be a hit record. A year ago he was still using that theme on his satellite program which was aired on the 1950s channel. Brucie is probably older than Joey as is Dick Biondi. Some guys will never retire.

I believe Joey is 70 or 71. And he didn’t go to Detroit right after KB as one poster said. He went to WIXY in Cleveland. Brucie is 73. Dick Biondi is 78.

You are correct, LM and I stand further corrected, Joey went to WXYZ, not WJBK. 'KNR, 'JBK and 'XYZ battled for the Top 40 Title in the Motor City, later joined by CKLW. Quite a fray! The only excuse I can offer for my error... lots of call letters and a lots of years.
