John Adams to CBS 19 Tylert

KYTX CBS 19 in Tyler is runnkng on-air promos saying "John Adams joins CBS 19 July 2nd." V-e-e-e-r-r-r-r-y interesting. How does this change impact both the decision of who does which weathercast and what influence, if any, will it have on channels 7 and 56? What's with Doc Deason?

Doc is lively, John is dry--but both are good meteorologists. This could be the start of something interesting, or it may simply mean John Adams was tired of doing whatever he was doing and wanted to get back into television.

Perhaps Stormy got a job in a larger market.

He's got the Ben Stein voice, without Ben's sense of humor. I hope they didn't demote Doc, because of this. Or maybe Doc got smart and is bolting for somewhere else since their journalistic integrity has been compromised. Hurley's probably done this, to save face. He knows the Lauren Jones debacle is going to cost him viewers and for some unknown reason, some people like John on-air. I don't know John behind the scenes. He may be a nice guy. The only time I ever met him, was when he was still at KLTV and I was in Middle School. He came and talked to us about "Project Tornado". On-air, he's just as boring as boring can be.

It worked out really well for Hurley last time he hired Adams. I believe that's when KETK went on the air. They really cut into KLTV's numbers then. ::)

Well, gotta' come to the defense of Mr. Adams.

When I was at KOOI in '99 to 2001, I worked a lot with John when he did weather for the Waller stations. As dry as he is on air, he's that much funnier off air....and he knows it, too. The minute the light is on, he's all bidness and deadpan. The minute its off, he one of the funniest guys I've ever had the pleasure to crack-wise with.

He should let some of that personality shine through on-air. A lot of people in this business, whether they are taught that way, or just think that way, seem to get a lack of professionalism and personality mixed up. Yes, there is the fine line you have to be careful not to cross, and believe me I've seen that happen. But, you have to have a little spark to your presentation. This is why Scirto is so good at what he does. He has fun with the other talent, and with the folks watching at home and he delivers fun and professionalism, not to mention an accurate forecast.

Even, East Texas most trusted Weather Personality, Dr. Bob Peters has a little 'spring' in his voice when he delivers the forecast. John just needs to loosen up a little.

Much of the same could be said of Troy Dungan. He comes across to me as very dry, but calming when the chips are down. John does me the same way. I know he's dry. But, I trusted him (as I do Scirto and Deason).

It is interesting to note the July 2nd is a Monday. Wonder how all this is gonna shake down with Doc and John?

Ah, yes....the dean of East Texas radio weather. And agreed on your assessment of him being the most trusted. That man can tell you more as a blind person where a storm is likely to hit as any sighted person. Simply amazing.

I actually like Troy. He has some good banter from time-to-time with Gloria & John, and whoever's left at Belo(w)'s Flagship. Gotta love the bowties, too. Does anyone know when he's retiring?

Well, let's see.....I've worked with John Adams, Scott Fossey, Scirto, Mark Rowlett and the esteemed Dr. Peters. And by far, I'd turn to Bob if I REALLY wanted to know about the weather.

Keep your double doppler and other high-tech gizmos. Dr. Peters could feel the bunion on his big toe, or have his elbow ache a bit and tell you what corner of your house was gonna get hit by the tornado.

Actually, Mark Rowlett was chief for the first couple of years; it would be sometime after mid-1989 before John Adams made the jump.

He amazes me with his ability to get a bearing on a storm and tell you what that joker's about to do...almost as if he's "The Thunderhead Whisperer".

I've heard stories of people that tried to sneak out of his classes at TJC. Not only did he know they were trying to sneak out, he'd call each of the about-to-be perpetrators by name and tell them "class isn't over yet". Truly an amazing individual.

I dreamed of someday being able to follow in his footsteps. After thinking about it and having more years under my belt, I've realized just how hard his shoes would be to fill.

I now return this hijacked thread back to its original topic.

73.....

I'd rather talk about Dr. Bob anyway. I never had the pleasure of meeting him, but I'm sure he's quite an interesting fellow. I'm actually surprised that one of the television stations don't use him (off camera, phoner type interview), when it comes to extensive hurricane or tornado coverage. I think it could help their jump start their ratings... especially KETK or KYTX. Dr. Bob is truly an East Texas legend.

In years past, I believe KLTV has used him as a political analyist on-camera. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong about it being KLTV.

John is not a good meteorologist. He just uses the NWS forecast and does as little work as possible. People just assume anyone that dry and boring on the air must know what they're talking about. I don't know how this guy keeps getting TV weather jobs.

Dr. Bob knows twice as much about meteorology and works hard at it, John used to listen to Dr. Bob on the radio before doing his forecast. Dr. Bob is a great guy and a true East Texas legend.

Bob did some election night analysis at Channel 19. I know because I took him over there. Your all missing that aspect of Bob's versatility. I would use him on election coverage on KTBB and on my show, and his memory for political history was amazing. He is also better than a network computer at predicting, with only a small percentage of the vote in, who's going to win a particular race. He is great fun to joke around with, a facet of his personality that isn't used nearly often enough.

Roger's right on the nail on both counts. Dr. Bob's great at calling elections. I've also enjoyed many a morning when Dr. Bob and Mike Edwards would have a lively banter back before the morning show tempo was sped up (not saying that was right or wrong...just saying).

Hey Roger...you ol' liberal troublemaker! How are 'ya?

Did I see you giving, uh, 'personal' instruction to Lauren Jones on the KYTX website?

Drop me a personal note/message here with your new email and we'll catch up!

Have you got 19 doing a car show yet? :D

Actually, Mark Rowlett was chief for the first couple of years; it would be sometime after mid-1989 before John Adams made the jump.

It was 1993 when Adams (along with Chuck McDonald) "made the switch to Region 56" as it was said back then. I remember KETK running a brief little welcome at the end of their newscasts to both Adams and McDonald on their first nights on 56.

It's finally nice to see John Adams returning to East Texas TV. It's a good way for 19 to save some face after this Lauren Jones garbage.

Yeah, my partzimers disease is catching up with me. I forgot it was Bryan Houston, Leslie Roberts, & Mark Rowlett that were the first anchors at KETK. I forgot that Chuck and John came later in the game. I think Jim Knox (FOX Sports Net) was the Sports Director, too? I can't remember. Anyway, sorry for the mistake.

I wonder how John and Stormy will get along?! ;)

Fine, unless they try to out low-key each other.

Comment was made eariler that Adams "is not a good weather man." Relative to Scirto and some othes with respect to energy level and other variables that point may well be true. But seeing as his forecasts and other elements are right on target Adams is as good as they come.

This of course is my opinion. There are those who will strongly agree and yet others who will strongly disagree.
