John and Ken Picked as Top Talkers

John and Ken, who do a PM drive talk radio show on KFI, AM 640 in Los Angeles, were recently selected as the top local talk radio hosts by Radio and Records Magazine. They were selected for this distinguished award over the hundreds of local talk shows hosts across the nation because:

a. They provided excellent coverage of a local public policy issue
b. They raised a substantial amount of money for a prominent local charity
c. They insulted just about every political group in Southern California especially those associated with the Democratic Party and homeless, disabled and Hispanic advocacy groups.

I didn't know you were on the R&R selection committee. Can I send you my tape? I can do what they do just as well--or better, most likely.

And, also, I didn't know R&R judges got to provide "sponsor" statements. Just like Congress--hot air, with little substance.

But thank you for your comments.

R&R N/T Local Personality of the Year

The award was announced one month ago at Radio and Record's annual Talk Radio Seminar. John and Ken shared the award this year with KGO, San Francisco personality Ronn Ownes. It seems like nominees are drawn from a small pool of best-known hosts and stations each year, the same hosts and stations that keep popping up on the NAB Marconi Award, Talkers Magazine and other lists. I'm listen to them pretty often and they also go after Republicans as well...they despise President Bush....

Thing is, these groups have NEEDED to be exposed and insulted.

Just like the commercial for "LIFE" cereal..."(They'll) eat anything."

The only time they go after Republicans is when they are ranting about illegal immigration. Nothing short of a 20 foot wall along the border with Mexico is what they want. If a Republican politician even hints at supporting amnesty, they are attacked. Aside from immigration, they have never criticized Republicans. As I noted on my blog, over the last two months, they have interviewed 38 people, including 16 state legislators on a variety of subjects including illegal immigration, public schools, child pornography, and capital punishment. All of guests represented the conservative side of the arguments and all of the politicians were Republicans. They have never invited or interviewed a Democrat on their show despite the fact that most elected officials in Southern California are Dems. <P ID="signature">______________

re: John and Ken Talk Red in a Blue State??

By that do you mean they talk Republican ("insulted just about every political group in Southern California especially those associated with the Democratic Party") in a Democratic state?

What Democratic state? Southern California is and has been predominantly Republican/Red for decades? Northern California may vote Democratic but KFI reaches Northern California (and the rest of the West) only on its nighttime sky wave. Are we talking about the same California that elected Ahnold, Ronnie and Tricky Dick? California is a swing state. Like several key states, California is divided between a conservative region and a liberal region and the balance of political power can tip from one to the other. But the Southland is far from Blue.

And the LA market first established strident, arguementative conservative talk radio in the 60's with hosts like Joe Pyne, Wally George and Bob Grant. John and Ken are just following a well-trod path in LA radio.

I don't know where you live but I would guess that it insn't in Southern California. The LA radio market which includes LA and Orange Counties is overwhelmingly Democratic. Dems hold 12 of the 17 Congressional seats, and during the last Presidential election Kerry beat Bush by 15% and Senator Barbara Box beat her Republican opponent Bill Jones by 35%! These totals are higher than the statewide numbers which also skew heavily Democratic.

Are we talking about the same California that

Reagan and Nixon were involved in California when it was a swing state. Since Gov Pete Wilson supported anti-immigrant legislation about ten years ago, the state, which is 30% Hispanic has trended predominantly Democratic. Arnold, who is now sucking up to the Democrats, was elected in a controversial recall election, which was actually energized by right wing talk radio.

I am not arguing that talk radio is not a fertile ground for Democrats and Liberals. Even in San Francisco, arguably the most liberal market in the country there is no local liberal talker on the air between 9 am and 10 pm. and conserative talkers like Limbaugh and Savage dominate the airwaves. The post, which you can read on my blog, just points out the hipocracy of the RR selection process results in two dirt bags like John and Ken being selected the best local talkers in US.
