John Bolaris

It's nice to see John Bolaris back on the air in Philly. I think he's doing a great job trying to get fox on the map in this town(especially on the 5 pm show). On another note. Does anyone know whats going on with Rob Gurino? I think he would be great on NBC 10 with Hurricane. Rob is a very good metioroligist.

It doesn't matter who is on which station. As long as they all do, "Let's cause a panic" promos, they all disgrace themselves. Earlier Saturday Glenn Schwartz did a promo about telling how the snow would affect us.....at eleven. Of couse not mentioned that the forecast said the snow was in Allentown and the Poconos. This is as bad as the hurricane season panic in Miami via their disgraceful local stations. Until viewers stop allowing themselves to be made fools of and avoid listening to radio or going online for forecasts this kind of despicable garbage will continue to be broadcast. Wake up! These stations are laughing at all who fall for this crap. Stop being fooled and go elsewhere for an accurate forecast. If all you do is complain then you deserve to be taken for suckers.

I don't seem to remember anyone "complaining" in this tread. It seems like you may have a problem with local TV weather people.

Get it through your head. These are NOT weather people. these are NOT news people. They are all performers playing the part of news and weather people. I could care less what kind of journalistic background they have. They have been trained to be performers first and journalists and weather people second. This is the nature of the TV business. Listen to Don Henley's "Dirty Laundry" for an accurate portrayal of what passes for news.
I'll continue to say it....the weather panic promos are a disgrace and viewers MUST send a message by getting accurate information elsewhere.

Meteorologists are indeed "weather people."

I think the point is not all weather people are meteorologists, which in Philadelphia is true to a point...there are a few actual degreed meteorologists (who have a bachelors of science or greater degree in meteorology and not the Mississippi State certification that magically transforms you into a meteorologist) on TV in Philadelphia.

Hurricane Schwartz
Adam Joseph
Erica Grow
David Aldrich
Kathy Orr
Maria LaRosa
Doug Kammerer
Dave Warren

I'm not sure about Karen Thomas' (NBC 10 weekend AM) credentials....several others in Philadelphia (including Cecily Tynan, David Murphy, Karen Rogers) have the Mississippi State certification in broadcast meteorology, which allows the TV station to call someone on air a meteorologist even though they don't have a four year degree in the subject.

I found this site trying to find out what happened to John Bolaris after he disappeared from WCBS in New York last month. It is good to see he is on air somewhere, since he got treated like garbage by WCBS who replaced him with an ex-soap opera star who doesn't even have any training as a meteorologist. Bolaris is also a really nice guy who I have had the pleasure of meeting.
Then I found this interview with him that gives his side of the "storm of the century" which according to him was not the reason he left Philadelphia: http://phillyist.com/2008/01/14/phillyist_talks_to_john_bolaris_part_1_the_storm_of_the_century.php
It claims to be part 1, so perhaps more is to come?

Where did they go to school? They're forecasting accuracy sure leaves a lot to be desired.

It doesn't matter if they are legit meterologists or not. They trash whatever program they went through by acting in panic promos that attempt to force people to watch what turns out to be carefully worded copy in the hopes the average viwer will stay glued to that specific station. Their degrees are worthless toilet paper unless put to the use they were intended.
On one hand, it's good business according to today's lack of standards in TV so-called news. On the other it is a disgrace to fool people into watching.
Again, to stop this no9nsense, go elsewhere for your accurate weather/news etc. and stop relying on people who just play you for fools and laugh at you.

I believe Hurricane, Erica, and Maria went to Penn State. Adam is Lyndon State (VT), and Kathy went to Syracuse. Don't know about the others.

“go elsewhere for your accurate weather”. …I never use the TV or radio for my real weather information. Sure I watch the pretty talking heads, but when push comes to shove I’ll use the National Weather Service and other weather sites. Many if not all of the TV talking heads are using the same information anyway. But as it turns out, in this most recent case, even the NWS changed its forecast very late Sunday. Not an uncommon occurrence during the winter season as these coastal lows are very tricky to predict. Regardless of what anyone thinks, weather is very difficult to forecast and meteorologists are correct more often than they are wrong. A good place I send folks for a brief review of the art of forecasting is here: http://www.theweatherprediction.com/philosophy/conception/

For those that get Channel 69 (WFMZ) they actually explained why the storm changed and thus why the original forecasts where not accurate.

Thus in my opinion the issue here is not the accuracy of the forecasts it is the hype the stations generate during the potential winter events. But then this hype is not limited to weather but many so called ‘news events’. The downfall of local TV news accelerated with the proliferation of internet news sites. Why do I need to wait to 11pm or even 10pm for my news when I can get it NOW on the internet? Thus local TV needs to resort to pretty faces and hype hype hype.
PS- TV shows on the network are NOT news (Dancing with the Stars, Idol etc etc)! But I digress…that is a topic for another day on another thread!

Channel 69 runs a very good newscast and are an exception to my various rants. Sure, their graphics and presentation aren't as slick as the big boys - but you can tell they try a lot harder too. Theirs is a straight-on newscast that seems to do an excellent job of covering their primary service area (Lehigh Valley/Berks County).

Truer words were never spoken! And, that is an infectious virus that has become a pandemic in newsrooms all over the country. American Idol is a TV show. It's artificial and, as such, is NOT news! However, valuable news time is taken up with these promotional pieces - time that should go to real news. Worse yet is when other (non Fox) channels deem AI to be news! What are they all smoking?
