JOHN BOY AND BILLY ON DVE?!

So it's about 2:20 A.M. Eastern Time as I type this, and I've had DVE web stream (since I'm out of market) on since the post-game show for the Steelers game. After Tim Benz and Tom Bradley signed off, it went to music, and after a couple songs, Jack Maloy came on for a break, as per usual at that hour (approximately 1:30 A.M.). However, at 2 A.M. on the dot, the song that was playing, Tom Petty's "I Need to Know", immediately stopped, and all of a sudden it's the not-so-dulcet tones of John Boy and Billy. I'm praying this is just some mistake on the stream, but I'm fearing the worst here. Can anyone shed some light?

Clear Channel stations across the country have shut down the over the air webcasts from approximately 12am local to 6 am local. Most stations rudely cut into John Boy & Billy, Elvis Duran, or a generic music service produced by CC. WASH out of DC uses a CC oldies feed. It is marketed as "exclusive to our webcast listeners." Anyone know the reason for this? I understand the talk programming replacing the music programming to possibly cut down the royalty fees, but why replace a station's normal programming with programming that does not even match - such as WASH, for example?

Jkf, thank you for the thorough explanation. I apparently was not aware of this trend. When I first heard Jack Maloy interrupted by JB&B, I was just floored over the idea a live DJ at the (arguably) most popular station in Pittsburgh was being replaced by ANY syndicated show, let alone THAT one.
