John C. Moore

I am very sad to hear that John passed away. This is not the 107.9 John Moore but the John Moore who was the PA voice for ECU for 18 years, did great radio for WCPS,WKTC and 1070 WNCT.He also did voice work for Channel 9.He was a true pro with a great voice and a nice man.He did a great farm show for 1070 and was a good football play by play guy.I worked with him for about 14 months from March
1987-May 1988 when Katie was still in Tarboro on 104.3 when the Harpers had it.
The Harpers sold it to Curtis/Osborne and that's when the station changed frequency, moved out of Tarboro and was never as good as it was when the Harpers had it in my opinion.I saw John from time to time over the last few years and it was a thrill when he would compliment me or tell me he liked me on the radio. He was one of the true greats in this area and I hope folks remember him for the great radio man he was,not to mention he coined the phrase.. "First Down
Pirates" which excited so many for so long that love ECU Football.

I remember John too. He was a good guy, only met him once or twice. I never worked at WKTC, but they were my competitor while I was at WFMA in Rocky Mount. I did 7-midnight at "Carolina Country" WFMA 100.7. Sometimes after I would get off work I would drive over to Tarboro and have coffee with the jock on the air Dan Tanner.
Remember Will Jackson? That was back in the early and mid 80's. How time goes on...

I liked Will.I think he is out of radio. The last I heard he had worked with Johnny Bryant some in Williamston but that was quite a few years ago. Will was also a good musician. He was the MD when I was part time with Katie. Was Rob Lynn at WFMA when you were there Rick??? I liked Rob alot.He was a cool guy....

Allen

Yeah. Rob was the guy that gave me my first full-time job in radio. Last I heard he was back in the Charlotte area. He is a great guy. I drove back and forth from Kinston to WFMA to do my show. I learned allot under Rob as well as Joe Warner who owned the station at the time!

Rick

First off, my condolences to Mr. Moore's family, i remember hearing this great
voice for the first time when he worked for Bob Harper at WCPS in Tarboro, and
i assume he did some things for the original WCPS-FM and what would become
WKTC, but he would become well known for his P.A. work at Ficklen Stadium,
and as a ECU Pirate Fan, whenever at the home football games he did the first
down call, that was my favorite!
I noticed some on this post are reminiscing about the old "Carolina Country"
WFMA in Rocky Mount, i've often wondered whatever happened to people like
Rob Lynne, Paul Bulluck, Rick Roberts, Art Simmons, David Guth, Kris Richards,
and others, it was a good local station, along with 810 WCEC, which was limited
because of signing on at sunrise and going off at sunset.

I'll chime in here. I work in the same building as WFMA once was in as well as WCEC. WRVA is now what WFMA once was. When Joe Warner sold the station back in the mid 80s. WRVA still has Rocky Mount as it's city of license. WCEC went dark and is no longer here. I even have an old Country Lovin' WFMA bumper sticker somewhere. I remember both stations, but only a little. When First Media Radio, bough the facility they had to put up a new tower as the old one was nothing more than rust. I presume that the tower was WSAY's, but it started in 1989 so I doubt the tower would have been in that much neglect in 2002-03.

WFMA was a good local station. Joe Warner the owner at the time, hosted a daily talk show called "Partyline" it was very popular. I loved working at the station and learning the business. Rob Lynn was a great guy and turned out to be a good pd. He took over from Ray Massie who now I think is programming KNIX in Phoenix. Frank Hayden was the sports guy at WCEC/WFMA he passed away a number of years ago.

I worked at WFMA until they signed-off to allow WTRG to go on the air in Raleigh. WFMA was gone but WCEC became a classic country station with the same WFMA jocks. That was in the late 80's. Joe Warner and Gordon Finney (who owned WRMT) teamed up to put WSAY "Say 98.5" on the air in 1990. WCEC then went dark.

As far as some of the staff goes, Rob Lynn I hear is in Charlotte. Paul Bulluck went to school with me, not sure where he is. I myself (Kris Richards) am currently in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. This got me thinking, does anyone know what became of Randy Steele, aka Wade Allan Jennings? What about Dan Tanner? He worked at WKTC and came over to WSAY. Bob Mitchell? Time does go on.

All the Best!

Kris

Good old Gordon Finney. He was a good guy but boy was there alot of internal stuff
going on during the SAY years.Gordon certainly did things differently.I really like Gordon but gosh what a soap opera... but really no different from most stations I
guess.Daytime soaps have nothing on Eastern NC radio....
