Sierra H Broadcasting has announced the appointment of John Candelaria as Program Director of Phoenix rimshot Hip Hop “101.1 The Beat” KNRJ Cordes Lakes and Rhythmic AC “Mega 104.3” KAJM Camp Verde AZ.

Candelaria was most recently Operations Manager and Program Director of Beasley Media Classic Hip-Hop “105.1 The Bounce” WMGC, Adult R&B “105.9 Kiss-FM” WDMK Detroit and Gospel “Detroit Praise Network” until stepping down in March.

I wonder what this will mean for Mega. My impression is that while programmers come and go over there, the station pretty much always settles back into what they've been doing forever. Will this guy try to change things? And if so, will that last?

A fresh set of eyes will do that place some good. I heard Shining Star by the Manhattans into Regulate by Warren G. That's a train wreck that belongs down on 95.1. Pick a lane, do you want go after 40 year olds or their parents? The model that should be followed is XHRM in San Diego. That station is on point for old school R&B.

As for KNRJ it seems to me they've evened out a bit over the last year. Sampling it the last couple days I rarely heard a song I'm unfamiliar with and overall it sounded decent. Making it the hip-hop version of KMXP could be a respectable little lane to carve out.

At the end of the day Sierra H (Ken B) is pretty averse to big change. They have zero debt service and low overhead so they don't need to bill a ton to turn a profit. As long as they aren't losing money he's content with how it is.
