John Catsimatidis Will be Acquiring another Station

It’s been just about two months ago that he Told Sid Rosenberg he was going to acquire another station. He also added it would be no later than January & They would discuss it more after the Holidays. We’ll, is this all Hype or is he really going to get another station this time ?

Usually the buyer and seller have to agree on a lot of stuff. Just because a buyer has the cash doesn't mean a "instant" sale. Lance can tell you sometimes "easy" deals aren't.

I've explained this so many times. Once more before I close this thread:

Cats is a self-promoter. He'll tell any story to keep himself at the center of attention. And it works for him because people like you pick it up and repeat it.

Will be someday buy another station? Maybe yes, maybe no, but he has proven repeatedly that just by saying "I'm about to buy something," he doesn't really have something in the works.

So the best way I find to deal with him is to mostly tune out his public proclamations. If and when he's really buying something, we'll all know as soon as it's filed with the FCC.

At the time Cats made the announcement about buying another station, he said it would be like a farm team/
minor league version of WABC. Who needs that? It sounds kind of bush-league as it is now.
It’s getting by because Cats has really deep pockets. Hard to believe the spot-load alone is supporting it.
And why is their modulation so low?

That's an interesting subject. I post here all the time about radio needing multiple revenue streams. That's part of the story with Red Apple. They're more than just the one local radio station. Red Apple also has a syndication division. WOR did the exact same thing before iHeart bought them. So that enlarges the sales footprint beyond NYC. It also broadens their INFLUENCE. That's a big word in social media. People call themselves "influencers." That's what conservative radio does. It's more than preaching to the converted. It's about motivating the electorate. Is there money in that? You tell me.

I'll throw this into the cauldron: Catsimatidis told one of my colleagues at Salem New York–probably an intentional slip–that he offered to purchase both WMCA and WNYM from Salem. If true, these alleged negotiations were going on before Salem's Dec. 30 announcement regarding WaterStone and the sale of the CCM stations to EMF.

At the same time, Red Apple's contract to continue running both Cats and Cosby and The Cats Roundtable on 970 was about to expire. Salem wouldn't sell out to Cats in NYC, but Red Apple signed a new time brokerage deal to keep Cats' shows on WNYM for the foreseeable future.

Since then, I believe he has said next to nothing about buying another station on WABC's air. That doesn't mean he doesn't have anything in the works, of course.

So yeah, Catsimatidis is just another self-absorbed billionaire blowhard.

I agree. I don't think they're done. Just that they're done with EMF. JMHO.
Are you referring to Red Apple buying or Salem selling?

If it's the latter, remember that the WaterStone deal paid off Salem's debt. They don't have to sell any more stations unless they want or need to. And if they did, WaterStone will now have a say as they control 40 percent of the company.

Salem selling. WaterStone is primarily interested in digital content, not broadcast. My take is they made this investment for content, not transmission. That's just my impression based on what I think WaterStone does. In my view, Salem is under merchandizing its content. They create a lot of content that is mainly heard once and disappears. They need the investment from WaterStone to build a better platform for their content. Both from the political side and also the Christian teaching side. I think WaterStone is REALLY interested in the Christian teaching side. But then again, that's my opinion. You're on the inside, and I respect your view on it.

There is still going to be a reckoning on the broadcast side. The ministries, particularly the national ones, who buy time on Salem stations don't necessarily need the Salem model now.

So this is more about the Christian and conservative talk, the political lobbying, and the Salem News Channel. And I agree that there will be more of a digital emphasis in those efforts because terrestrial radio isn't the future.

Lest we forget the right-wing websites like HotAir, Twitchy, RedState and Townhall that Salem also owns and which IMO are poised to outlast their radio station division (and would appeal greatly to a WaterStone).
