John Curley on KIRO 7pm

Wonder how this will dovetail into his responsibilities on the Sammamish City Council as meetings are scheduled in the evening hours. That being said, I look forward to giving it a listen and congratulations John.

Smart move. Curley is excellent, although he is better when paired with a sidekick to chat with. Frank was unlistenable. When R&D signed off I hit "P2" on my radio as quickly as I could to avoid accidentally hearing Frank Shiers. Blech.

I am not the kind of guy to rejoice with bad news to others but as I've posted here before, Shiers is clearly a legend in his own mind. He is easily one of the most passive-aggressive air types I've ever heard. He always maintains he's interested in other viewpoints but he really isn't - he wants you to accept his tight-assed, ultra-right wing views as gospel. I sincerely think he's one of those tightly-wound GOP types who smiles in public but off the air he has a raging anger he finds hard to control. I'm not saying ALL GOP'ers are that way, btw. But we're getting used to the headlines concerning raging homophobes who are arrested in rest rooms or fire-breathing defenders of "family values" who are caught in hooker stings.

I don't know all the details but I think Curley was shortchanged by the folks with Evening Magazine. They made the show unwatchable (IMO) with Meghan Black - she has a plastic, fake sheen while Curley seemed more down-to-earth.

There will not be a huge audience for KIRO at night and I imagine John won't be getting rich but I wish him the best. Give KIRO credit for keeping it local and having the good sense to ship Shiers out.

Curley made Evening Magazine unwatchable for 14 years. Too goofy, too dopey, too sophomoric. On the flip side, hope his radio gig goes better.

I dread Curley filling in for other hosts and think his radio is unlistenable.

If you ask me (and nobody did), the real talent here is Mike West.

West has the radio presence and experience to pull it off. That frenetic energy Curley has on TV doesn't quite transpose to the medium. He speaks too fast.

On the other hand, listen to West: He's born to the medium, his voice, his delivery. It's as simple as that.

TV guys rarely transform into radio stars and vice-versa.

Have you seen Thom Hartmann on TV? He looks nervous and thin. But his radio presence is great!

You get the feeling West has the potential to exploit the time slot and develop a true little following and niche with it, sometimes being serious, sometimes really far-out, as Larry King did on his Mutual radio before he had his first heart attack. West has warmth.

And no, Mike didn't pay me for this. I've never met him.

Agree 100% that Mike West would be the perfect choice for KIRO at night. He fits the sound of the station and has radio experience. Wish Curley the best but it seems a misfit, as was Luke Burbank at night on KIRO. Burbank is suited to the color commentary role, Curley would be better in that role too. A radio vet like Ross makes Burbank better, West would make Curley better. Ross and West are fine solo as well, but KIRO seems to be into teams these days. My two cents and worth every penny.

I give credit to any talk station in any market that keeps it local. Don't know much about Shiers or Curley, but people want to hear about the issues that affect them where they live. :)

Thank God!
He was absolutely terrible! and if I had to listen to one more story about him driving around with his daughter in the back seat helping her get to sleep I was going to puke.
On top of all that he really was right wing talk too and as someone on here stated he was a "legend in his own mind".
Listening to him was almost as bad as listening to Corry Reynolds - *vomit* yet another unlistenable from the old days of KBSG/Entercom.

I don't disagree about Mike West. He is a great radio personality and I'd give a lot for a Crow-West reunion. But the times he has filled in KIRO shifts with Curley have left something to be desired. Something about the West/Curley dynamic is "off". I don't at all enjoy the two of them together.

I agree that it takes a particular chemistry to do a two person show w/ someone like Curley. I always thought John and Mike made for a good program that moved along and didnt get bogged down in b.s. that, with other shows, often sounds like we're sitting in on a station staff meeting. The worst pairing with Curley was when he did a shift with Don O' Neil a while back. It was awful. Don was (and is) such a damn bulldog it really sounded like Curley was starting to get pissed and ready to walk..

I'm curious about a point that EdS mentioned earlier: If John makes all the hay from charity auctions and is involved with City Council, isn't this the worst possible shift to choose (accept)? Then again, I've run into Curley at several daytime charity and weekend events so maybe if you're "selective" it can all work out. Maybe it is all about just getting on the Bonneville (for now) bus and be ready when all the dust shakes and settles later.

Here is what I don't get...

Curley hasn't been in his new gig for 2 weeks and he was gone last Friday...Tuesday night (3/1) Shiers was back on and this Friday they will air a "best of."

Call me old fashioned, but when you take on a daypart, you have to develop consistency. And it takes a MINIMUM of 6 weeks to establish the "change" on a daypart. I know he has the auction thing, but.....where does his priority lie? ???

Plus...I know him from TV....and I've met him in person....but when I listen to him on radio, it just does NOT sound like "John Curley." Oh, he has a good voice for radio, but it doesn't sound like him---from what I remember. When he and West were on together in his first week, I couldn't tell who from who?

But with Ryan Hatch now a lame-duck PD (and he must know the numbers are going to drop dramatically when the Seahawk post-season data drops), who is there to really guide this station?

Heck. I'm going to apply for the job. ;D

You can see when the council meeting are at http://www.ci.sammamish.wa.us/citycouncil/Default.aspx# most of them are in the evenings. The council is a part time gig so they will be understanding I am sure to whatever point they can. I am a resident of the City of Sammamish and have attended many of their meetings. Councilman Curley always adds a great perspective to the sessions and so this will be interesting to see how it works out for everyone.

...and it will be interesting to see how he handles "equal time" issues come re-election season.

I caught him last night and was tremendously unimpressed. He alienates his audience by talking down to his producer and co-host, acting generally condescending, and issuing edicts such as "people who carry credit card debt are uneducated and should be better than that."
