John DePetro - his ratings/contract

I keep hearing the anti-DePetro crowd on this site constantly
predicting his demise at RKO.
Given his increased ratings and his contract I don't see DePetro
going anywhere.
Who can RKO put in that slot who will do better?
AM talk radio has two pretty solid constant trends nationally.
It MUST be local and it usually leans to the right.

Where does Depetro get off calling himself The Independent Man.
He is about as "Independent" as Rush Limbaugh and less interesting.
DePetro is predictable and therefore violates the first canon of talk radio: don't be boring.
Heard him on the cross-over with Blute and Scotto and he regurgitated the same right wing play book dictates on Cyndy Shehan. Wow, that was interesting and would make one want to stay with his show. Not !
Now that WRKO's GM, Tom Baker ( 'Not a bad guy') is gone as well as Rick Carbery I wouldn't be so sure that DePetro is safe.
More than that his RhoDiland accent over shadows anything he says. You would think that WRKO would demand he go to a speech coach to help him lose it. Some say the accent comes from the immigrant language influence of the French and the Italians in Rhode Island. Whatever, it prefaces whatever he says. And yes, WBZ should send Paul Sullivan with him to lose his Lowell "Irish" accent too. OK, I have offended the French, the Italians and the Irish. Sorry, if I left anyone out ;-)

Yes it's important to have local hosts, good ones who can grab ratings. Many stations can also grab good ratings with syndie hosts like Rush, Savage,
and Hannity, too. WTKK could save money by ditching Severin for Hannity "live"
but Severin gets pretty good ratings and he's local (no snide remarks about
doing the show from L.I.!)

I don't know the show-to-show ratings WRKO has and don't know exactly how well
DePetro is doing (or Howie, etc.) but overall they do well 12 +. If they got rid of him (low ratings? save money on salary? jumping to another station, maybe in
Prov. again?) I guess they could grab Glenn Beck who airs in that timeslot.
But for now, if he gets the ratings...

As for left-right, we're waiting to see if a major station can put left-leaning
hosts on and get really good ratings (and I guess a few AAR-type stations
are doing OK in certain cities). So far the track record for liberal hosts has been pretty week--Ann Coulter pointed this out in one of her books when she mentioned the low ratings grabbed by Cuomo, Hightower, etc.

Picture a major city like Boston. Have a station with fairly high power like
WRKO and put liberal hosts on, and they get a 4.1 or something. Then we'll
know liberal radio can be a success. (I will admit that WKOX and WXKS can be shaky signal-wise in some places but overall they cover the area well.) but overall conservative-leaning hosts have the advantage. Maybe that's because the country is leaning slightly to the right idealogically. There are some who
are conservative on all fronts; some who are conservative on taxes/war on
terror/immigration/gun owner's rights, but may be liberal on issues like
abortion or gay marriage. There are some who are leftist on most issues,
and some who are leftist on EVERY issue.

But put it this way: there were probably a lot more "Democrats for Bush" than
"Republicans for Kerry" in the last election. It is this political mood of the nation that (yes, I'm getting back to radio) is reflected in talk radio:
conservative talk attracts more listeners because most Americans are slightly to the right of center (and like talk hosts who reflect their views.)

Hey lay off Depetro, he is a good guy who is trying hard. As far as "The Independent Man" moniker, it is from RI. Roger Williams, the state's founder, not the guy who plays BORN FREE, is known as "The Independent Man," and in Providence John went after everybody and was in nobody's pocket!

Why?
He seems to be in the Right Wings back pocket and is as "independent" as Rush or Ann Coulter.
Besides that he is boring.
Maybe he was big in little old Rhode Island but not in a larger radio market.
He sounds like a minor leaguer and his "accent" doesn't help the matter.
As to a person, I am sure he is a good guy - just not one to whom I wish to listen.

park, it's obvious you're a liberal and you don't like DePetro's political leaning and that's fine but it always cracks me up how people piss and moan about a particular radio show as they LISTEN EVERY DAY.
park, tell me who you could plug in the 9 - 12 timeslot and have them energize the audience?
I think DePetro is very provocative on many topics and I also think he's the type of host who's an acquired taste. Over time people come to like a John DePetro type host.
I think if RKO is patient DePetro will continue to grow his audience.

I don't think John DePetro is going anywhere.

It takes time for a talk-show talent to become established.

Re: John DePetro - Accents

I grew up in the Boston area. I currently live in Rhode Island. Anyone in Boston complaining about a Rhode Island accent is the pot calling the kettle black. It's laughable. The Boston accent is awful.

Re: John DePetro - Accents

I couldn't agree more.
IMO Eddie Andelman is the worst I've ever heard.

Re: John DePetro - Accents

Yes, that is true but with the exception of Paul Sullivan, no one on Boston Radio has as bad an immigrant inflected accent as does John DePetro. It is really unexceptable in a major broadcast town.

park, your axe grinding vis-a-vis DePetro is becomming a bore.
If you don't like him don't listen.

Re: John DePetro - Accents

Whether I like DePetro or not does not change the fact that he needs to lose his ethnic Rhode Island inflection and he can take Paul Sullivan and Eddy Andelman with him.

My prediction for August 2006: DePetro will still be on WRKO from 9 to 12, and parklane will still be making the same complaints he was in August 2005 and August 2004.

As said above, some say WRKO is already "a joke". This just proves it.
