John Depetro to start on Valentine's Day at 630 WPRO

I just heard about John Depetro replacing Dave Barber. I never liked Depetro (or any other local talk show host on WHJJ) that much but will listen to him since I listen to 630 WPRO. Looks like things are going to get interesting at WPRO. John is going to start on Valentine's Day. Maybe PRO thinks that Dan will be easier on him since it is Valentine's Day? I always liked Dave Barber and thought he had a really entertaining show. I still miss Steve Kass, but have grown to enjoy Dave Barber, and now he's leaving for good? I've listened to Dan since he started at WPRO and he often criticized that other station or that other guy (I think most people knew who it was). I heard Depetro a few times when he had part of his show broadcast on Cox Cable Channel 3. He was ok, but I still liked WPRO's personalties better.

Re: Question

Looks to me like it might be more like the beginning of another St. Valentine's Day Masacre. DUCK DAN!!

I would be surprised if Dan is still working there in a year. Either they are going to get rid of him (or) he's going to leave because he can't stand working around Depetro. Something is going to happen.

As you can imagine, very few cocktails.

Even before John DePetro's 2/14 debut, here's a Valentine for YOU.

If you were there in Big D, you'd've found it in your RAB07 registration bag.

JD sounds great today. He sounded rusty over the Christmas break covering in NY, but today he sounds just like he did before he left.

John seemed a little nervous but I believe he will be fine. He handled callers complaining about The Arlene, Howie and Dave firings quite well and proffesional.

They should give him the full 3 hours.

A caught a couple of listeners talking to John and they seemed to find something worth listening to.Since Arlene was canned the listener in Rhode Island was lost.

Good evening from Siberia...

Hello from Newark Airport Hilton...and possibly THE last hotel room at the airport here, and FULL of other stranded pilgrims. Flights to Providence were canceled, so my hoped-for trip-home-from-Texas ended here. Room Service called back all apologies that they were out of tuna.

Sorry I missed John's debut show. Posts here suggest that he had time to do SOMETHING-other-than Operation Snowball...namely, unavoidably, addressing the recent Providence radio bloodbath.

Before the next round of market-rocking radio changes -- and there IS a next round looming -- here's hoping that severe weather will also abate long-enough for John to settle-in and do-what-he-does, a show-about-what's-going-on-OUTSIDE-radio-stations.

Stay warm,

Amtrak.

EWR/PVD, faster (when you count waiting in TSA lines) and cheaper.

Wear old shoes with easily washed soles.

I wish!

Best they could do is get me into PVD @ 914PM.
Translation, 1030, with yesterday's weather.

Then'd I'd've been stuck with walk-up rates at a downtown PVD hotel, since I couldn't have gotten back to The Block. So I burned some Hilton points and let Continental finish the job.

Yeah, the schedule is not the best. I used to use Amtrak when wrapping up business with the networks of a Friday afternoon. Take the train up to PVD, use a limo to get to the airport to pick up a rental car and still be time and money ahead when compared with flying up. But to get to the island...yeah....but what's the best way to get there outta Hillsgrove (I live in the past); is somebody running a schedule or do you then have to drive to Point Judith or somewhere for a ferry? I used to fly myself over out of Fall River (before it turned the airport into the city dump) but never liked doing it by night. Whatever happened to Mel Frazier (Hajii-Bababba!)?

Remember the TV show "Wings?" THAT'S Block Island airport.

When I'm flying from Westerly to Block Island in the dark in the winter, it's often just me and the pilot; and I take TREMENDOUS comfort in the likelihood that she was daydreaming less than I was during math and science.

RE Green Airport to The Block: JUST TODAY, I was listing options for out-of-towners headed this way come summer. For 60 or 70 bucks, you can get a car to take you PVD to WLY or Point Judith. If time-is-of-the-essence, consider chartering from Green Airport to Block Island, via New England Airlines, The Official Airline of www.ListenToBlockIsland.com

And on a chilly night like tonight, don't you feel just-a-LITTLE-warmer thinking about summertime, summertime, sum-sum-summertime?

But we digress.
This thread is about The Station That Reaches The Beaches.

As a mater of fact WPRO reaches a good part of Long Island doesn't it? I know that I've received the station in Rye New York (just 20 minutes from Manhattan). I also used to receive it from York Beach Maine. Not bad coverage for a 5,000 Watt station.

RE "Not bad coverage for a 5,000 Watt station"

For AM stations, the-lower-the-dial-position, the better; although directional arrays -- a REAL black art -- push-and-shove the signal in specific directions, to protect other stations on the same frequency, especially at night, when the signal is a skywave bouncing off the ionosphere.

WPRO shares AM630 with -- therefore protects -- WMAL/Washington, and two Canadian stations.
