John Dimick Can't Be Nuts

As far as I know, John Dimick is a respected programmer. He programmed for Jefferson-Pilot in San Diego and then for Emmis in New York. LFM President Don Benson thought enough of Dimick to leave the National PD chair vacant for a year until Dimick could get freed from Emmis.

Am I naive to think there must be a method to Dimick's madness, i.e. a reason behind Star's weekend programming? But what is it?

Roddy,

I agree with ya, but I have no idea what to expect.

They wrench the playlist into a mainstream CHR direction
They can Steve & Vikki
They can the retro 80s show

Then they go back to the 80s and 90s...Will the Morning Mess be on Tuesday? Will the format be Hot AC?

Not to stir up rumors--I knows nussing--is a format shift in the offing? Is Star throwing in the towel on CHR? Although running into a hot/rocky AC buzzsaw against B98.5 is not my idea of an intelligent move.

I'm not into conspiracy theories but here's two possibilities:

1) Star has a contract with Jams that these old jingles have to be played at least once every decade, hence they had to dig out the retro tunes.

2) With the Radio One downsizings, now former WJZZ's Smooth Jazz afternoon host Rene Miller will be resurfacing starting this Tuesday night at 94.1 for "Jazz Flavors".

With the possiblity of B98.5 heading younger...it is possible. Star might be adjusting the format to go to war with B98.5 (if that is the direction B goes into). Additionally...their current programming is not working anymore. They have coasted by for years catering to different demos in different dayparts.

Everyone appears into agreement that The Morning Mess will be out on the streets soon. A shift to hot AC (which has not been done in Atlanta in over a decade - when Star 94 launched as a hot AC) is the smart thing to do to save the boat (which is sinking - and so is the potential selling price when LF decides to sell).

This may be a stunt to a hot AC flip for all we know (it is the change of the month - when most flips occur). They may be retaining most of everybody - and holding off until Tuesday after the holiday to tell those who are being canned (so they don't ruin everyone's weekend - like when Clear Channel canned everyone before Christmas 2006). They can't flip until those who have been canned have been notified and escorted from the building before they have the chance to crack the mic and say a few four-letter words through it.

Here's another possibility:

Maybe it's a one-time music stunt on one of the lowest-cumed weekends of the year. Maybe since very few people listen to radio at ALL on holiday weekends, they figured that ANYTHING that might draw a touch of cume is worth doing. Maybe it's not to test the waters, tip off a format flip or anything like that. Maybe the station will be back to normal on Tuesday morning with the same format, same morning show, same promotions, and same plan for the future.

Crazy, I know, but maybe...?

You could be right. Who knows?

Latest watercooler scuttlebutt from inside Star 94 centers around a re-branding and trashing the "Star" name to completely disassociate from its previous life ... possibly coinciding with the canning of the Mess and the re-focus on Cindy & Ray.

I can't offer any proof, but I've heard they added AUDIO to Mark Kanov's closed-circuit security camera in the break room! :D

A friend, a knowledgeable former jock and PD in Atlanta, thinks this past weekend on Star was a good idea. He said it was a way to "shock the cume in a positive way," to keep the phones lit and to energize the jocks (although everyone on was a part-timer).

That might not be a bad idea (a.la. 94.9 going from Peach to Lite). A full-out flip to hot AC under a new identity could be a possibility.

One option that is out...WQXI-FM 94Q (Because it would affect Q100).

If you get the chance to meet him you'll find out real quick that John's total focus is returning 94.1 to market leader status - including finding a PD. There are no sacred cows. Anything is possible. Hey you gotta believe that after you've spent time programming Hip-Hop in New York and wearing a flack jacket to work that taking charge at Star would be a welcomed challenge!

So when is John Dimick going to start making his moves? (Oh, that's right, he killed the top-of-the-hour jingle.)

September ends the summer Arbitron survey and also ends diaries forever in Atlanta. The PPM starts in October. Will anything change by October 1?
