John Ferguson

A man whose voice WAS LSU football for decades.

Ferguson was great at painting a picture of what took place on the field, and that was useful for many of us who were Tiger fans long before we ever had a chance to make it to a game in person. His descriptions were vivid and his energy was invigorating, and I looked forward to listening to him and Walter Hill call the games each week.

John relinquished the radio mic to Jim Hawthorne in the mid 80's, and continued broadcasting Tigervision games for a couple of years afterward. When he left--and for many years afterward--he was sorely missed; but he continued with LSU in a fundraising capacity for the Tiger Athletic Foundation. During LSU's 100th year of football in 1993, it was a distinct pleasure to hear Ferguson and Hill get together one last time during the LSU-Tulane game, and to hear Sid Crocker make an encore appearance on the Tiger Stadium PA system he had graced for so many years.

John Ferguson died Saturday at age 86. Sid Crocker died early this year at age 82. Both were veterans who served this country with distinction. We appreciated them in many ways.
