John Gorman seems a little hesitant about HD

John Gorman's opinion of the current state of HD radio, he also has some suspicions about that ibiquity questionnaire which was posted here a few months ago. First it had 41 questions, all of a sudden it only had 16, the first one had many questions about the Alliance. John's perceptions seem pretty accurate, what do you think?

"Memo to Lyin’ Diane Warren, the new president of that Archdiocese of Ruse - the HD Digital Radio Alliance: Give me a break and give it a rest. No one’s buying your deceptive HD Radio campaign. Capishe?

I’m talking about the headline in one of the on-line trades just before Christmas: HD Alliance Continues Aggressive Marketing Campaign.

I ask – you’re continuing what aggressive marketing campaign? Did I miss something? If so, why?"

/snip/

"It didn’t help HD Radio’s dubious reputation when consultant and paid iBiquity shill Fred Jacobs did his stab of betrayal and was outted for his questionable and quickly-yanked research study.

There was that 41-question survey about HD Radio from Jacobs for iBiquity mentioned in a Radio-info.com forum on October 31 that was hastily replaced by a sanitized 16-question version. Some believe the original study was designed to set up the former – ahem – leadership at the Alliance."

Wow, what a news flash. John Gorman doesn't like HD radio.

This just in... Sun predicted to rise tomorrow. Truely hot news.

I do notice that despite himself he can't seem to decide if HD radio did or didn't promote this past year. In the same article..

I ask – you’re continuing what aggressive marketing campaign? Did I miss something?
and then
For the second year in a row the HD Digital Radio Alliance ran more radio spots than any other marketer...You beat Walmart’s 1.64 million; Geico’s 1.56 million; Verizon’s 1.24 million, and Home Depot’s 1.22 million.

I guess the facts go both ways, depending on which way John's branch is swaying in the moment. As I always say, pick a complaint and go with it.

This is the kind of utter nonesense I see all the time. How can anyone read this and NOT just laugh? John is a talented programmer, no doubt. At least he was a while back. He should stick to it. He then features insight from Joel Salkowicz of Pulse 87.7. That's the guy who's losing his butt trying to sell audio from a Low power TV station as a radio station. While Joel Denver did interview this guy, perhaps we could find someone who could at least turn a profit in New York City. Or work in Radio and noit TV?

I see he does mix in a "Boobie Struble", though. If your position is so weak you have to mock someone's name, it says a lot. Hey, John! You forgot the part about "if you read an HD bradio brochure you'll get cooties". If you don't like the system, fine, by all means write about it. A lot of us respect what you have done. How about if you grow up enough to retain that respect and lose the third grade humor..

Should we refer to you as someone named after a guy who hires a hooker? No. I post that solely to make a point. It's like scoring a touchdown. Don't behave like a Jackass in the end zone. Act like you've been there before. Now I know in the "Clearcutting" playbook against HD radio, all is fair game, no matter how juvenile. And I respect the viewpoint, but everytime I see these antics from ANYONE they slide a little furthur down the slippery slope... It's sad to see Gorman heading there.

I think Gorman's sarcasm is funny as hell, I do laugh and the reason I laugh is because he presents the absurd in a comical way which makes you want to finish the article, now that is talent.
"For the second year in a row the HD Digital Radio Alliance ran more radio spots than any other marketer." Even if the sheer volume of ads are aggressive, they are for nought and they are more obnoxious than aggressive. Colon Blow Ads are more interesting and better executed and have definitely gotten better results.

There are many things which are funny as hell. The Movie Airplane! is one. Spaceballs, is another. John ought to stick to what he knows. Programming and promotion. Shrieking "Little Booobie Strooble" and argueing both sides of an issue at the same time obviously aren't his forte.

Clouseau

Don't get me started on Airplane. Thirty years later I still say "Don't call me Shirley!" to somebody at least once a week. That and "...day ain't over yet" from City Slicker's (Curly's reply to Billy Crystal when asked "Kill anybody today, Curly?") are my two favorite movie lines!

I have to say that I don't like to see anyone called a "boobie", especially an industry associate. It is one thing to disagree about technology or call people on incorrect or misleading information, but quite another to launch a personal attack on someone because you don't agree with their point of view. I hope we can at least get away from that on this board.

Gorman, entertains, he's funny, makes you laugh, cry and angry. If HD broadcasters could find content like that, they just might have something.

He also has a way of cutting through the bull and exposing HD and it's partners for whom they're.
Some might not agree with is opinions or colorful phrases, but that's ok too.

It's our differences that makes things interesting. If we only came together to complement each others shoes, well the would be in word, BORING as hell.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled bashing & debating.

And don't call me Shirley! haha! I still hear that one and laugh every time.

I also hate to see anyone's name being mischaractorized as being akin to a human body part especially such a highly esteemed, very respected member of the radio community. Everyone knows the correct representation is Strew-Bull.

So because he an "Anti" guy, he get's a free pass to act juvenile. Got it.

Odd how so many of the Anti gang are right there with "Boobie", "Kevy" & now "Lyin', Diane". Yet complain so often about HD adocate's "Arrogance".

That's OK though. They're "Funny". :)

Yes, he is funny and CORRECT, can you refute ANYTHING he's written in that post?
There's an old saying: You can gather more bees with honey than with vinegar. Gorman IS funny and also makes very good points through humor that the largely humorless IBOC crowd doesn't like, and they don't like it because what he says is true and also they get a little taste of their own medicine. The arrogance of the IBOCers knows no bounds, they think they own the airwaves and can just run roughshod over the little guys and worst of all they justify it by saying that the all mighty FCC has sanctioned it. Yes, for now, but remember bad decisions can be and are reversed. The anti-IBOC crowd largely attacks IBOC, the IBOCers largely attack the anti-IBOC crowd, kind of odd isn't it? It is until you realize that the IBOCers can't attack analog radio because they know in their hearts IBOC is a scam, and analog just plain works better and will be around long after IBOC is just a distant bad memory, so their try to ridicule the messengers. Gorman gives them a little taste of their own medicine, not funny is it? IBOC and especially AM iBOC has run it's course and not many people in the business don't already know it. All IBOC has done has been to divide the radio community when it needed to be together more than ever. iBlock has done absolutely nothing for radio except shatter it.

KB1OKL said:

Obviously I can't list the entire thing, but as I review it I have to say you basically can't refute any facts in it. And thet's because there are very few, if any, actual facts in it. John's pretty funny, though. To puff up his egocentric blog it's heavily footnoted. Using such great references as Wikipedia to explain to us what "Christmas" and "2008" mean. The footnotes are not "ALL" garbage. When he contradicts himself from earlier in the article to state that HD radio ran more spots than Walmart, he actually liinks to the Wal-Mart Site. Not a site that supports his claim (Which is correct BTW) but a site that lets you shop at Wal-Mart. Maybe he was directing people to the 9 different HD radio models I found available there. I did not know that :)

Some of the other "Facts" he presents,

...we know two facts:
1. HD Radio is something no one wants or needs.

I'm sure he believes that "IS" a fact. An of course since he footnoted an opinion piece from his buddy Harker in FMQB... if it's in FMQB then it must be right, huh. Harker and Gorman have history, but let's not get bogged down with that. Gorman represents Harkers OPINION in FMQB as a fact. Here's another fact. It's been reported that there are now 1 milllion HD radio sold since day one. For something that "NO ONE" wants, that's a lot of sales. HD RADIO has a long way to go, but "NO ONE" wants it? And we're having this discussion why since "NO ONE" want's it?I guess I'm the only one in the industry that wants HD radio. But remember, not "only a few" want it. "NO ONE" wants it . He's an idiot. And then.

.2. Your creative can’t save it.

Well if someone's opinion is a fact, then why not just go on and claim your PREDICTION to a skewd question as fact. The question is skewed, the premise is flawed and the documentation is ludicrous. I respect John as a programmer, but this "Blog" is Zechino-esque, only slightly more civilized. Very slightly.

THIS PIECE BY GORMAN IS A JOKE.

Right, they're constantly going around calling people names. As for lack of HD radio humor, you can only deal with so much of this Numbskullery, before it ceases being funny.

The arrogance of the IBOCers knows no bounds, they think they own the airwaves and can just run roughshod over the little guys and worst of all they justify it by saying that the all mighty FCC has sanctioned it. Yes, for now, but remember bad decisions can be and are reversed.

Yes they can be. And maybe they will change. Or maybe they won't It is interesting that if one follows FCC rules and "YOU" don't LIKE the rules, then the rule follower is arrogant.

The anti-IBOC crowd largely attacks IBOC, the IBOCers largely attack the anti-IBOC crowd,

Am I misreading this Gorman peice, or is he just ripping lyin' Diane and Boobie Bob a new backside. Are you reading the same piece I am? ! ?. In the entire history of the HD radio debate, IF you can show me ONE ARTICLE BY ANYONE, even me, that is more personally vicdictive towards any 2 members of the Anti HD radio crowd than this is to these two people, I'll mail you a $20.00 bill. I mean it. Bob, your assertion is just not true. I tend to routinely debunk the idocy that appears. And the vast majority of it is HERE! Nonesense about Lack of DX reception from Cincinnatti and Chicago. The vast majority of the complaints I see are WAY out of area listeners. Where's the complaints in metro NYC? How about Metro Cincinatti? You feel you are being persecuted beecause of your ideas. They're not rooted in todays radio reality. That doesn't make you a bad person. But it doesn't make them valid either.

Kind of odd isn't it? It is until you realize that the IBOCers can't attack analog radio because they know in their hearts IBOC is a scam, and analog just plain works better and will be around long after IBOC is just a distant bad memory, so their try to ridicule the messengers.

Now you know what's in my and other's hearts? OK. Perhaps now we're getting somewhere, though. Why would anyone "Attack" analog radio?AM sounbds lousy, we all know that. You'll say it doesn't and I'll point out it's basically killed itself off already due to bad sound and coverage. However, it's there for now. Analog OUGHT to go away, because it is innefficient use of spectrum, IMHO, but there is a matter of a few zillion analog radios. You're throwing a tantrum here without really thinking this out, Bob. Happens a lot in these discussions. This isn't a Digital vs Analog fight. At least it's not to most of the rest of the world. This is why your're having trouble grasping the overall picture. (Yep, there for once I'm being arrogant). HD offers more choices and improved sound. That's the deal.No wonder you think there is no legit discussion from the HD people. You're apparently expecting them to trash you precious analog. Not happening. They own those stations.

Gorman gives them a little taste of their own medicine, not funny is it?

I do not think Gorman is dispensing a "Taste of Pro HD medicine". His "OPINION BLOG" is riddled with factless opinion and then Laced with BS footnotes to try and disguise it as as "research". It's demeaning nonesense diisguised as "Facts". And clearly some are slurping it up, just like an Old English Sheepdog downing a fresh bowl of Anti-Freeze. The Radio industry is changing. It has left MANY of those from the past behind and they are having trouble adjusting to it.I suspect Gorman is among them. I know I did have trouble adjusting for the longest time. It's a different business now. That's why I crossed over to the dark side.:) Here, let me put on this big black helmet...

(Cue the heavy breathing) "Bob, not only do you share the same first name as Savage, but there is another secret you should know. His Father's, mother's, sister's grandson's maid's husband once cut your grass.":) Meanwhile...

All IBOC has done has been to divide the radio community when it needed to be together more than ever. iBlock has done absolutely nothing for radio except shatter it.

Certainly with FM, I see no sign of turning back. Maybe you do. By the way, I'd call it an industry, and not a community like Amateur Radio, but that's another story dealing with perceptions. However, If FM HD has divided the industry, but the industry is going to continue to adopt FMHD, wouldn't that make the "ANTI GANG" the dividers?

Something to think about.

Proof or at least source or link, please.

Mark Ramsay has "Certified" number of 370,000 up through 2007.
http://www.hear2.com/2008/02/hd-radio-sales.html
I believe an Ibiquity guy referenced the million number in a December interview. Might have been in Radio World, or in one of the others... It makes sense, really. With 40K sold in 2006, 330K sold in 2007, even flat receiver sales would get them 70% of the way there. Considering there are 100+ new models and these companies aren't making product because they're bored it's reasonable to assume they've done a million. However if it would make you feel better, the context of the original post remains. Perhaps I should rephrase the sentence.

"With certified sales of 370,000 radios through 2007, Gorman must be claiming there were no HD radios sold in 2008. Otherwise, how can "No One" want it?"

Thanks for allowing me to clear that up, Sup'. May we ALL be as accurate.

Clouseau

If I recall correctly the "millions" number referred to a projected number of HD radio microchips that were to be manufactured, and had nothing to do with HD radios that were actually sold to end users (listeners) and not returned.

Actaully we're both wrong. The answer lies in the middle.

The exact quote is from Jeff Jury of Ibiquity in Radio World. 12/09/2008

In it he states...

As of early October 2008... ... "And 1 million HD radio modules manufactured using those chips" Point taken. He is not representing radios sold. (Although as I pointed out, a respectable growth in receiver sales would get them to a million overall).

SO your recollection of "Were to be manufactured" is equally incorrect as my "Sold". BTW there is a reference to 1.5 million chips "SHIPPED" in the article. I woudl suspect that pre empts the "Were to be" manufactured.

We'll neeed to wait for the fianl results, like last year.

Nevertheless, the context about Gorman remains.

I forget where, but recently stru-bull did say the number was half million units sold since sept 04.
The company hasn't released the official 08 number yet.

That is correct. However even your platonic Soul mate Mark Ramsey admits to 40000 in 2006 and 330000 in 2007.

Now I'm sure you'll believe there are only going to be 130,000 more in 2008 to make the half mil.

Many others would suspect there was an increase from 2007 to 2008...

We'll see.
