John Granato: From 610 to ?

Granato was booted in the wake of his lawsuit against CBS Radio and Sports 610. Where is he trying to go by trying to beat his non-compete? Is CBS that stupid to not pay attention to every detail of his contract in the wake of the Charlie Palillo debacle last year? It's too bad. I thought Granato and Zerlein had terrific chemistry and really made a great morning show. Good chance KILT-AM will lose both listeners and advertisers. Granato brought quite a few of their advertisers to the table. You gotta believe he's trying to get to CC and 790. I doubt Granato wants anything to do with Cumulus. He's smarter than that, but you never know how much money talks. Would Cumulus pay to get him? Who is the Fox Sports radio affiliate? Granato does TV work for them.

I believe the Fox Sports affiliate is KBME. Now, all we need is for Rich Lord to defect and be paired up again with Charlie P.

The rumor seems to be 1560 KILE. Supposedly, the GSM at KILT, is taking over the Station Manager's chair at KILE, and he and Granato were friends. If it were 97.5, where would they put him?! Not in the morning, because of Mike & Mike. And, there was another post that mentioned 790 has changed the name of its website from 790thesportsanimal.com to 790bme.com. So, now you have to speculate if CC is committed to Sports?!

Check the other KILE threads for more on Granato. As for 790, it has several URL's that all go to the same site, so nothing has been changed.

All Access today is reporting that Granato was able to settle his suit with KILT and will be allowed to start working without having to wait out the non-compete.

Yeah, I saw that after I posted that (egg on my face). I should have known to check it out myself. KBME does seem like the logical spot for Granato. I hope KILE is not going to be Sports, as much of a sports fanatic as I am, there is no need for THREE sports stations, let alone four.

Actually, we don't need anymore News/Talk either, unless it is left-leaning talk. I'm still irritated about Ed Schultz being taken off KTRH.

The only way I see Granato going to KBME is to partner with Charlie Pallilo, he is the only one on that station that does not have a co-host.

Charlie needs help

I've known Charlie a long time and I like his encyclopedic knowledge of sports, but he needs help on his afternoon show. A sports talk show needs two people who can bounce things off each other and provide counterpoint. I think Granato could help, but I would rather see him working with Rich Lord again. Those two were made for each other.

Just curious: are there any female voices around who know enough about sports to do a call-in show? Now THAT would be different for this market.

They could call themselves "The Sorpranos on the Radio"... Pallilo and Granato. "Ya Betta Listen, or we'll wack ya!" ;D

I agree I like Sports talk better when you have two hosts. I like the banter and the occasional disagreements between the hosts.

If you want an example of how bad a one-man sports talk show can be look no further than Jim Rome. Case closed. Rome is as bad as it gets. I'd rather listen to paint drying. I don't know what kind of blackmail information he has on his network bosses, but it must be really really bad.

I like Rome. I like his style and I like the interviews. The standard stuff of 2 guys having fake arguments about the top 10 NBA players of all time spiced up with references to the "babe of the day" is pretty dull to me. Just a difference of opinion.

Thanks to settlement, Granato free of KILT

John Granato will leave KILT (610 AM), effective today, under the terms of an out-of-court settlement reached Sunday night in his lawsuit against CBS Radio, KILT's parent company.

Attorneys concluded the agreement just over a week after Granato filed suit against CBS Radio, accusing the company of breaching his contract and asking a Harris Country district court to dismiss the non-compete clause that would prevent him from working on air for six months at another Houston radio station after leaving KILT.

Re: Charlie needs help

There are some pretty good female sidekicks... though most are at the network level or working in NE Major Markets, NY, Philly, etc..

If you can get one to fill her role.. it works everywhere.

Palillo knows sports. Undeniable, but he has the personality of lead based paint. He shouldn't do a show by himself. Put a female with him? No, I don't think Charlie vibes well with the chicks. He needs a stronger male host in the big chair which allow him the op to throw in info-filled asides when the time allows.

I pray KILE doesn't go sports. But I'm hearing it might. That would be a huge mistake. I heard something about the possibility of Jim Carola going over there to do afternoon news? Is this truth or BS? Anyone?

Being Jim worked with the new Station Manager over at KILT, that's entirely possible. I hope it happens. Jim has a great delivery.

That's something I'd like to hear. There are funny women who are ballsy enough and who know enough about sports to make this happen. I think Laurie Kendrick is one of the funniest women around. I think she'd be perfect in this role but I don't know what she's doing these days. Is she working anywhere? That chick sidekick on Dean and Rog could probably do maybe even Martha Martinez if she'd leave 97.5. Cat Cortez? I think there are also a few working female comedians who'd work well in this role. Someone should kick this idea around. Personally, I think smart funny and talented women are pretty hot. Put them in a sports capacity? It could work.

You're absolutely right, and I believe Laurie is not on the air at this time. Chuck posted something about her doing some writing about a month ago. But agreed, she could hang with the big boys. She did so for years, with STEVENS & PRUETT. I love listening to women who know a lot about sports. I've met quite a few in the bars around here that know more sports than most men do.

Yes, there are some "female voices" fully capable of doing a call in sports show. Unfortunately few are given a chance to prove that they can do much more than news updates or traffic on sports shows. Honestly, if it were a baseball show, I could!
