David: John Mack Flanigan was in San Francisco on KFRC-610 in 1973. I have a tape of him doing a live promo for the arrivial of Dr. Don Rose. It was recorded the week after Columbus day while I was in Costa Mesa, CA. good DXing that night.

Someone in the "comment" thread on reelradio.com said he went to KFRC in 1972.

I have an aircheck somewhere of Flanagan on KTKT in
which he remarks--coming out of "I'll Be Around"--
that he's been around, he wasn't here yesterday,
just around.

He had probably been up in SFO doing an audition at
KFRC as he left for the Big 610 shortly thereafter.

I'm not sure why this particular aircheck is suddenly big news. It's been on the web site for about a year, maybe more. Flanagan is a native of Roswell, N.M. and worked in Sierra Vista before joining KTKT where I worked with him in 1970. Flanagan rarely had anything exciting to say but he did have a voice that fit in nicely with Bill Drake's Boss Radio concept. Last I heard he was retired.

I'll take a stab here--doing news?

Any idea when the "(echo) if you don't want
it heard on KTKT news, don't let it happen"
news close liner was retired?

Good guess. Jim Hood and I handled the news on Flanagan's program in 1970. The news closing you cite is something I don't recall so it probably departed before I arrived. Actually, all of KTKT's programming had reverb and it was distracting to put up with it on earphones. One day I used some reverse psychology and turned up the reberb all the way. It drove everyone crazy and the decison was made to drop the reverb entirely.

He arrived in SF in late '73, as I recall, so Columbus Day would be right. He was mornings and PD at KRUX, where I was OM, in early '73. He was replaced in late 73 by Geoff Fox, out of WGAR in Cleveland, who now does weather on a Hartford TV station.

I doubt it. I did not move to Phoenix until Spring of '72, and did not take on KRUX in additon to KENO, KWKW and KTKT until early '73. John Mack was still there when I arrived.

He sure was not on KTKT in '72 and '73, which were the years he was PD of KRUX in Phoenix. Both were Lotus staitons, so that may be the confustion.

He was at KRUX when he went to SFO. I was with him when he interviewed (With Michael Spears, if I recall) for the job at the Billboard convention in LA that year.
