John Madden Retires

John Madden has announced his retirement from broadcasting. He'll be live on KCBS (740 AM and 106.9 FM) at 8:15 this morning.

According to the station, he will continue doing his segments on KCBS each morning, but will no longer be doing game broadcasts on NBC's "Football Night In America."

Caliendo's impression is funny because Madden, IMO, should've retired at least five years ago. Used to love him on TV and radio. But the last couple of years on NBC have been rough. So much so that I started watching games with sound muted.

Still, He's a coaching and broadcast legend....and changed how color commentators were used on NFL broadcasts.
 
I knew him as a coach and could never have predicted he'd become such a wonderful broadcaster. I don't think CBS did either when they hired him. But he exploded on the scene right away and never looked back.
Glad he got out with his health and the time to still enjoy life to the fullest.
I think his daily chats on KCBS are great radio and should be the envy of competing stations.
Since I am "out of town" (to say the least), does anyone know if he will continue with the daily chat on KCBS?

I'm sorry we won't be hearing him doing his weekly football telecasts. I always liked him & still enjoyed him in recent years.
 
Another distinction John Madden has is that he was on all four networks announcing NFL games. I do not know of anyone else that has been employed by ALL four nets. Al Michaels is close, but not ALL four, NBC, ABC, CBS and FOX.

I don't think you can say "close" when Michaels only worked at two networks ... over the years there have been a few that have worked at three (especially when there were only NBC, CBS and ABC). I think Charlie Jones and Ray Scott may have worked at all three, if you count Jones' work in the pre-merger AFL on both ABC and NBC.

One more thought: keep in mind that after Gene Nelson retired from KSFO, John Madden soon stopped doing his "reports" on the station. When Frank Dill retired from KNBR, Madden continued for a short time, then moved over to KCBS.

Since Al Hart retired a short time ago (and, granted, was only coming in to do the Madden segment on Wednesdays), I'm wondering if the Coach may think that the radio thing has run its course now.

Wonder if he'll keep doing the "Madden Minute" on Westwood One?

Michaels did work for CBS very briefly in the '70s; he did a handfulof regional NFL games, and was listed as a contributor to their pregame coverage of Super Bowl VIII ('73-74 season); he was at NBC in '74 and '75, before joining ABC at the beginning of '76.

Could I be more wrong? It would be tough, but if anyone could, it would be me...

Meanwhile, John Madden announced on KCBS this morning that he will, in fact, continue doing the 8:15 AM segments on the station. Apparently there was some question that he might not.

Well, one of my motivations to take broadcast training at College of San Mateo was because Gene Nelson taught announcing there.

Recently posted on the museum website is the Gene Nelson 30th Anniversary broadcast, live from the Fairmont Hotel, from December 1, 1992:

The broadcast includes an extended "John Madden Report" with The Coach and The Empereror.
 
I wonder if anyone (NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX or the NFL) will provide Madden an opportunity to properly retire so his fans can get a chance to reminisce over his broadcasting career?
